View of the Dam square in Amsterdam, with the town hall, the Nieuwe Kerk, the Waag and the Damrak. The guards are holding back the rows of spectators invading the Dam on the 28th June 1748. Two bodies are hanging from the town hall: they arePiet van Dort and Mat van den Nieuwendijk, executed because of their role in the riots taking place between the 24th and 28th of June.This plate is a smaller version of a plate in a newsprint by Jan Smit II: 'Kort verhaal van het voorgevallene den 28. juny 1748. op den Dam te Amsterdam, dienende te gelyk tot ene uitlegging van de onderstaande plaat.' (See Rijksmuseum inv. RP-P-OB-84.018). This is plate 7 (vol.2, between pages 588 and 589) used in 'Nederlands wonder-toneel geopend in de jaren 1747 en 1748.' published in Leiden in 1749. Etching on paper with some margins; plate mark: 166 x 215 mm, total: 210 x 241 mm; some smudges and dirt on the margins, two vertical folding creases, otherwise in good condition. Muller 3938a (mentioned as smaller version).
