He then became Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, simultaneously teaching at Louisiana State, Tulane and Loyola Universities. His publications number over 600 articles, 13 books which he authored and over 30 which he edited, contributing articles to Dorland's Medical Dictionary and other references. His most important contributions include saddle block anesthesia; Adriani circle filter for the Forregger apparatus; the brachial plexus block by axillary route, a technique using glucose to spinal anesthesia, the first to use an electric stimulator to locate nerve for regional nerve block, central acting muscle relaxants for treatment of tetanus, an anti-narcotic for overdosage of narcotic poisoning, gas chromatography for analytical techniques in anesthesiology, a method for determining efficacy and potency of local anesthetics , use of succinyl choline as a muscle relaxant, a modified anesthetic apparatus for pediatric anesthesia, etc ; "He literally lived in the hospital in a room which was simultaneously office, library, and sleeping quarters, and he could be found there or elsewhere in the hospital at almost any time of day or night."--Isidore Cohn, Jr., M.D ; bookplate of John Leonard Pyron (1916-2005), who, with degrees from Birmingham Southern University in 1936 and a Masters in Education from the University of Florida, taught in Florida high schools from 1936-1946, until he attended Emory University and received a degree in dentistry in 1948.
