The ways in which a contemporary audience responded to the poetry depended on an understanding of their own language that the modern reader cannot hope to have. In this careful and original study of formal structure and poetic composition in early Greek elegies, A. W. H. Adkins supplies at least some of the tools of interpretation available to the ancient Greek and so reconstructs, for the modern reader, the sensibilities of the original audience. Whereas other studies of elegiac verse have treated the poems as historical documents or as indications of early Greek ethical thought, this work is sensitive to the subtlety and poetic craft inherent in the poems themselves. Using examples from the work of eight elegists Archilochus. Callinus. Tyrtaeus, Mimnermus. I heognis," Solon.
