In den Warenkorb8vo (139 x 215 mm). 154 pp. With 2 folding plans of Bahrain Island and Manama City, one full-page map ("Bahrain and its Neighbours"), many black-and-white photos on glossy paper, and plenty of local adverts. Original printed wrappers. Addendum. First edition, rare: the first tourist guide dedicated solely to Bahrain. The plethor…a of illustrations includes a half-tone portrait of Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, ruler of Bahrain, a picture of the Sheikh visiting an American aircraft carrier, a portrait of his eldest son, Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, the Sheikh's palace at Rifaa al-Gharbi, pearl divers, falcons and falconers, aerial views of Manama city, Muharraq town and the tumuli of Aali, Manama fort, a Bahrain Petroleum Company refinery, Suq al-Khamis market, Adari Pool, and more. At a scale of 1:600, the plan of Manama details principal buildings and places of interest, including the old and new palace, Juma Mosque, the Aramco office, schools, hospitals, cinemas, churches and cemeteries. The second plan, at a scale of 1 inch to 9,000 feet, shows the Bahrain islands complete with anchorages, piers, major towns and cities, roads and tracks, refineries, airfields, and water pumping stations. Designed to resemble historical maps, the Bahrain map features a compass rose, sea creatures and a wind-blowing cherub. - The author, known as Hamed to local Bahrainis, was the son of Sir Charles Belgrave, the financial advisor to the kingdom's ruling sheikhs between 1926 and 1957. Charles Belgrave contributed the front cover design of a dhow enclosed within a string of pearls, as well as several photographs. - Includes a traditional leather and brass cigarette case, its lovely coloured decor showing the twin minarets, bedouins, camels, palm trees and a small map of Bahrain. - OCLC 7400475. Not in Macro.
