[i.e. the Literary Gazette]' as follows: 'Your D'Israeli paper may be useful as there is a new Edition. May I do as I like with its matter?' He asks for 'an answer as soon as possible'.

A dedicated book collector, he is best known to historians for assembling the notable "Manley Sims Collection" of rare books and Etoniana, which he donated to his alma mater, Eton College.Born on June 19th, 1841, at Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, the son of the Rev Frederick Sims, Rector of West Bergholt, Essex, and Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He spent his early life in Suffolk, and was educated at Colchester Grammar School. Shortly before he was 16 he was apprenticed to the then well-known practitioner, Thomas Young, of Sackville Street, W, and soon entered as a student at St George's Hospital. Rising very early - at five o'clock every morning - he studied medicine and modern languages before beginning the work of the day with his principal, and was thus able to carry off all the prizes at his hospital, where he was appointed House Surgeon, and afterwards Demonstrator of Physiology. He started practice in Down Street, Mayfair, and in 1870 joined partnership with William Fuller, of 111 Piccadilly, whose niece he married in 1875. In 1884, on the virtual retirement of William Fuller, he was joined in partnership by H Roxburgh Fuller, of Curzon Street, who remained with him to the end.Manley Sims became a most fashionable physician, with probably the largest West-End practice, and his life was one of tireless labour. As of old he rose very early, and was often on his rounds in his brougham before breakfast. He was seldom in bed after 5.30 am, whatever the duties of the previous night had been, and during the whole of this enormously long working day his powers of close attention, accurate insight, and sympathy remained unabated. It is to his credit that he was very helpful and generous to poor patients, and possessing, as he did, the ear of a wealthy and influential clientele, he could often contrive a scheme of assistance in cases of sickness and misery that was practical besides being well meant. To do so was the greatest possible source of pleasure to him. There is offsetting from the prints to the text pages. There is no offsetting to the prints themselves and they are fresh and bright. The first issue with Mackenzie on the title print. It would be hard to find a better volume.

The title 'BERNADOTTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Shows Bernadotte in martial pose and uniform, riding his white horse over a fearsome serpent. He wears a sash on which are written the words 'Leipsic' and 'Victory'. The caption reads 'Round the head is a wreath of Laurel, which alludes to the brilliant Victories gain'd over the Scourge of the World, the Epaulette head of a lion the Star is formed Of the Trophies taken from the Tyrant, the Thigh is a figure of Liberty holding in Chains the Fiend Slavery, the Sheild the Swedish Cross, with the Sun Shining on the allies who are represented on the Shield, the Horse is in the act of Trampling on a Serpent alluding to the Fallen State of Buonaparte.' This loss has no effect on the text, and only the merest effect on the image, only trimming the outer edge of some very lightly-painted clouds. Apart from this good, on lightly spotted paper, with a thin strip from blue paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. Depicts a ghoulish Bonaparte, with a snake wrapped round his body, a sword of power in his withered hand, and a murderous crown, riding a winged horse of death across the globe. The title 'BUONAPARTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Caption reads 'The Horse represents Ambition leading on the Fiend, whose body is encompassd. by an Enormous Serpent, the wither'd hand and Arm grasping the broken Sword alludes to The Feeble effort made by Buonaparte to oppose the Conquering arms of the Allies. A Crown Encircles his brows formd of Daggers and Poison Cups alludes to murdering his own Soldiers The Thighs are formd of the Skeletons of the Massacred hosts, the boot a Deamon his guardian Genius'.
