CONTENT: The letters are primarily a correspondence between Roy Fuller & Neville Braybrooke in response to Neville Braybrooke's request for copies of letters to Roy Fuller from J.R. Ackerley that could be used for the book being compiled by Neville & June Braybrooke ÔThe Letters of J.R. Ackerley,Õ published 1975. Fuller's letters are written in a neat spikey hand and clearly show the affection and respect he held for "Joe," having kept all his letters "there are more than 68 items, but quite a few are mere notes-though scarcely without some characteristic phrases." Topics include references to 'Hindoo Holiday,' Ackerley's account of his time in India as the personal secretary to the Maharajah of a small Indian principality; 'The Listener,' with some notes from Ackerley being on Listener headed paper; and Fuller's novel 'The Ruined Boys.' Discussion also on the detail of poetry such as 'Waist of the Wasp' a poem 'To a Wasp' by Fuller included by Ackerley in an edition of 'The Listener.' Neville Braybrooke's hand-written notes in red felt tip & blue biro add information on dating and cataloguing in preparation for his forthcoming book; the letters are also grouped in Braybrooke's system of paper clips and staples, keeping batches of letters together. Ackerley letters to Fuller are written with wry humour and sharpness ".the book made heavy demands on my concentration (as, for instance, Compton-Burnett does, and Francis King doesn't.)" There is also insight into Ackerley's scorchingly strong working practice and principles: "I don't wish to pat poor poets on the back just because they are poor poets. I also think that it is necessary to try to have or set a standard of value, and that far too much, O far far too much is being written." JOE RANDOLPH "J. R." ACKERLEY (1896Ð1967) was a British writer and editor. He joined the BBC the year after its founding in 1927, and became literary editor of The Listener for more than two decades where he was responsible for publishing many influential British poets and writers. He was openly homosexual, at a time when homosexual activity was forbidden by law and socially unacceptable. ROY BROADBENT FULLER (1912Ð1991) was an English writer & poet. He received a C.B.E. and Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1970 and the Cholmondeley Award from the Society of Authors in 1980. NEVILLE BRAYBROOKE (1923-2001) was a man of letters: poet, novelist, essayist, biographer of Olivia Manning, editor, literary critic and publisher of Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography. Very good.
