From the library of entomologist and traveller Guillaume Marie de Rougemont (1945-2020), who had a particular interest in Ethiopia, with his bookplate. First edition. Text French. Achille Raffray (1844-1923), a French diplomat and entomologist. He led a mission to East Africa from 1873 to 1875, on behalf of the French Ministry of Education. Traveling with the Consul de Sarzec, he explored Lake Tana, and visited the Abyssinian city of Gondar, and the towns, lalibala and Adwa. During the expedition he encountered Yohannes IV Emperor of Abyssinia.

Plon, 1876 Quarter calf, Cr.8vo. xii,396pp. frontispiece and 9 plates, (4 folding), coloured folding map. Raffray was "Charge par le Ministere de l'Instruction publique d'une mission scientifique dans l'Afrique orientale", and travelled between the coast at Massaouah and Lake Tzana in the years 1873 to 1874. A presentation copy from the author to Monsieur Dourneux. Extremities a little rubbed, a very nice signed copy of the first edition in a contemporary maroon quarter calf with marbled boards and endpapers. Paris, Plon, 1876. Pp. XII, 395 (pp. 97-108 bound after p. 72). With 1 frontispiece, 9 (4 double-page, 1 folding) woodcut plates and 1 colour, folding map. Original wrappers. Spine browned and a little rubbed. Some foxing in places. An uncut copy. In 1873/74 Raffray explored Ethiopia, Zanzibar and the regions around Bagamojo and Mombasa. He travelled from Massaua to Adua and Sokota and from there to the then unexplored region of the Agao, about which he brought the first reliable news to Europe. He crossed Godsham and went to Lake Tana and Gondar and then through Woggara via Axum back to Adua and Massaua. Afterwards he spent several months in Zanzibar, explored the forests and shores of Bagamojo and then went to Mombasa. ? Raffray later became French Consul of Massaua and carried out a second expediton through Ethiopia in 1881 together with Gabriel Simon. ? Henze IV, 532.
