Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. One of the 2075 copies printed on rag content paper out of an edition of 2187 copies. Includes 22 colour plates and numerous photographs. A near fine or better copy with original cardboard packaging." The so-called "White Lady", a rock face painting near the foot of Brandberg mountain in Namibia, was discovered in 1918 by the German explorer Reinhard Maack. The book s text describes the apparent origin of the painting and the researchers' excavation methods. The painting shows a ritual dance, and the drawing is in fact a representation of a male shaman. It was Henri Breuil (1877-1961) who coined the name "White Lady" and suggested a relation to paintings at Knossos a bit of fanciful archaeology which implied a visitation by Mediterranean travelers." ; Folio 13" - 23" tall.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Two handwritten signed letters from Abb Breuil to Lina M. Slack contained in a white envelope addressed to Mr T. J. L. Wynne-Tyson, Centaur Press Ltd., Fontwell, Arundel, Sussex. The first written in French is accompanied by a translation into English in another hand and a note saying, 'Here is another of the Abbe's letters in French. If you can read it, & if you read French there may be something to gain from it. But I shall try & write a brief translation of it for you.' Written on headed notepaper from the College de France dated 14. xii. 1941? and consisting of about 250 words in which he wishes her 'every best thing for Xmas & the New Year.' He thanks her for her kind reception in South Africa and says he would have liked to work with her on the Riet River. He mentions that the engravings of animal figures she copied are very faded. He continues by saying he has a lot to do revising work and looking after himself. He ends by saying if she is in the neighbourhood he would be happy to see her. The second letter written in English addressed from 52 Motte-Picquet, Paris XV and at the moment from his country house at 4 Rue de Senlecq, L'Isle Adam, Seine et Oise is accompanied by its original envelope addressed to Miss Lina M. Slack Witikoner strasse 32? Z rich Suisse and by a typed copy of the letter which refers to Breuil's difficult handwriting and includes an enlarged photographic copy of the letter undated and consisting of about 340 words in which he says he hadn't heard from her for many years but he remembers their meetings in Johannesburg relating to the rock engravings she was studying. He doesn't have the relevant information with him in the country but he says they visited two sites near Kimberly and another on the road to Vereiniging. He requests a copy of a particular rock printing and its location. He says there are 3 or 4 distinct periods of engravings: big animals, medium sized animals and symbolic figures, Slack had formed some theories on the latter. Finally he says he can write the introduction she just has to remind him with a postcard. Abb Breuil (1877-1961) French Catholic priest, archaeologist, anthropologist, ethnologist, geologist. Driekops Eiland is situated on the Riet River, a tributary of the Orange River, south-west of Kimberley. Lina Slack worked with both Abb Breuil and Professor C. Van Riet Lowe (1894-1956), civil engineer and archaeologist, who were convinced of the great importance of this site.ÊHer recordings by rubbing the images and her photography were largely completed by 1938. Her book, 'Rock engravings from Driekops Eiland and other sites south-west of Johannesburg', with an introductory paper by Professor Clarence Van Riet Lowe was published by Centaur Press in 1962. Her somewhat fanciful speculations meant the book was not that successful. Jon Wynne-Tyson (1924-2020), author, Quaker, pacifist, vegetarian, animal rights campaigner and in 1954 founder of the independent publishing company Centaur Press which was based in Sussex. Very good. Very good. Signedes.
