Erstausgabe
First Edition. First state. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's original textured 'ripple grain' blue cloth with titles in gilt to spine and front board. 510pp. Very light bumping and edgewear, minor sunning to the spine, as often occurs, and a tiny pinhole or blemish to the cloth of the front board. Internally clean, printed asterisk to lower corner front flyleaf, top edge a trifle dusty. An handsome copy of a very notable book. Printing and The Mind of Man (for all its faults) proclaims this "Unquestionably Freud's greatest single work", and it is in the main through this Brill translation of the German 3rd Edition that the English speaking world was introduced to Freud's psychoanalytical theory, the erotic nature of dreams and the influence of the unconscious on the conscious state (later "the unconscious" became the "subconscious", as a more nuanced way of describing the things we constantly do and feel that we are unaware of doing or feeling).
