The first edition of this very scarce work.A detailed volume studying many different aspects of China. Alexander Wylie was a prolific author of essays, some published in literary journals, and others left unpublished in manuscript form until this volume, published ten years after the author's death. This volume collects his essays together and offer a vast history of China, looking at its language, culture, religion, and more.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.Wylie was a Protestant missionary to China, known for his scholarship during the late Qing Dynasty.Including a 'life' of the author.Label to the front paste down, 'Presented to the Royal Institution of Great Britain by Basil Woodd Smith Esq'. Smith was a classical scholar who was on the board of managers of the Royal Institution, and was a Fellow of the Society. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with discolouration and marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Very light rubbing to the front joint. Label and stamp to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Blind stamp to the title page. Good. book.

A classic of Sinology, first published in 1867, one of the best reference work available to European scholars. The British missionary Alexander Wylie (1815-1887) spent half of his life in China, and published a number of important works on Chinese philology. After his return to England in 1877 Oxford purchased his substantial library in 1882, doubling the size of their Chinese holdings and transforming them into a working research collection.
