First Edition. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 334 pages; Description: xiii, 334 p. : ill. , maps ; 25 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. [245]-326) and index. Subjects: Shelton, Albert Leroy (1875-1922) --Travel --China --Tibet. Summary: Dr. Albert Shelton was a medical missionary and explorer who spent nearly twenty years in the Tibetan borderlands at the start of the last century. During the Great Game era, the Sheltons' sprawling station in Kham was the most remote and dangerous mission on earth. Raising his family in a land of banditry and civil war, caught between a weak Chinese government and the British Raj, Shelton proved to be a resourceful frontiersman. One of the West's first interpreters of Tibetan culture, during the course of his work in Tibet, he was praised by the Western press as a family man, revered doctor, respected diplomat, and fearless adventurer. To the American public, Dr. Albert Shelton was Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, and the apostle Paul on a new frontier. Driven by his goal of setting up a medical mission within Lhasa, the seat of the Dalai Lama and a city off-limits to Westerners for hundreds of years, Shelton acted as a valued go-between for the Tibetans and Chinese. Recognizing his work, the Dalai Lama issued Shelton an invitation to Lhasa. Tragically, while finalizing his entry, Shelton was shot to death on a remote mountain trail in the Himalayas. Set against the exciting history of early twentieth century Tibet and China, Pioneer in Tibet offers a window into the life of a dying breed of adventurer. 1 Kg.

Zustand: Sehr gut. Original hardcover with dust jacket, xiii, 334 pages, some illustrations, very good condition. Long overdue biography of this missionary, who worked in Eastern Tibet, mostly at Batang, from 1903 until Shelton`s murder in 1922. The biography is well researched and quite detailed, but it could have been better illustrated given the richness of the available material from Shelton and is much too short about the role of his wife Flora Beal Shelton, who did much to spread the good Doctor`s fame and also translated as first Westener Children`s stories into Tibetan and was also pivotal in compiling the first Atlas in Tibetan based on Western material. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - With the vague intention of winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan, the US government has mismanaged billions of development and logistics dollars, bolstered the drug trade, and dumped untold millions into Taliban hands. That is the sobering message of this scathing critique of our war effort in Afghanistan. According to this book, America has already lost the war. While conducting extensive research and fieldwork in Afghanistan's war zones, a drumbeat of off-the-record and offhand remarks pointed the author to one conclusion: 'We blew it.' The sentiment was even blazoned across a US military fortification, as the author saw at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam in insurgency-wracked Laghman Province: 'I glanced over at a concrete blast barrier while waiting for a helicopter,' Wissing says. 'Someone had spray-painted in jagged letters: 'The GAME. You Lost It.'' The author's vivid narrative takes the reader down to ground level in frontline Afghanistan. It draws on the voices of hundreds of combat soldiers, ordinary Afghans, private contractors, aid workers, international consultants, and government officials. From these contacts it became glaringly clear, as the author details, that American taxpayer dollars have been flowing into Taliban coffers, courtesy of scandalously mismanaged US development and counterinsurgency programs, with calamitous military and social consequences. This is the first book to detail the toxic embrace of American policymakers and careerists, Afghan kleptocrats, and the opportunistic Taliban. The result US taxpayers have been footing the bill for both sides of a disastrous Afghanistan war.
