A very nice rebound copy of this work. First edition. Bound in half brown leather with marbled boards. Clean and tidy with very slight rubbing only. The text block is clean, if fractionally darkened. Errata slip present. A classic work in the theory of colonization. Wakefield proposes among other things the creation of a colony in New Zealand to be administered by the Church of England, thus disarming missionary opposition. In fact, the first emigrant ships left for the Canterbury settlement in 1850, and Wakefield himself left for New Zealand in 1853, eventually settling in Wellington. 230 by 150mm (9 by 6 inches). xxiv, 1-514, 6 (ads). pp.

Hardback. 1st Edition. Large octavo size [16x24cm approx]. Very Good condition - some quite light wear to spine edges. Mild stain to front board. Rear hinge a little soft but solid. Brown cloth boards with gilt decoration to face. Title patch [a little worn] to spine. Overall quite a nice copy. 513 pages. Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796-1862) is considered a key figure in the establishment of the colonies of South Australia and New Zealand (where he later served as a member of parliament). He was best known for his colonisation scheme, sometimes referred to as the Wakefield scheme, which aimed to populate the new colony South Australia with a workable combination of labourers, tradespeople, artisans and capital. The scheme was to be financed by the sale of land to the capitalists who would thereby support the other classes of emigrants.

331; 341pp. 2 vols. 8vo. First edition. First edition. 331; 341pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Founder of the "New Colonization System". Following imprisonment, Wakefield began to study colonial affairs of Australia with an eye towards immigration. Recognizing that the depressed condition of Australian affairs was due to a lack of efficiency and sensible handling he gathered his theories for correcting the problems and first published them in "A Letter from Sydney" (London 1829) under the name Robert Gouger. It was so well done that the author was supposed to be an immigrant. He revised and refined these views for his "New Colonization System" in "England and America" as the chapter the "Art of Colonisation." The theories for his "System" were to abolish free grants of agricultural land, requiring a fixed price which would be kept low enough so that a laborer would be able to purchase land after a few years [this to reduce the number of ex-convicts laborers from receiving land for which they had no use], to regulate immigration and to use tax monies from the rental of grants to bring laborers to the colonies. One of the main results of his publications and efforts was the founding of the National Colonization Society and then the South Australian Association, the latter intended to be based upon Wakefield's theories. He was also a close advisor to the Molesworth Committee. On the appointment of Lord Durham to Canada in 1838, Wakefield became interested in that territory and is credited with having greatly assisted Durham with his famous "Report on the Affairs of British North America." He also acted as an adviser to Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe in Canada in the 1840's. In 1837 Wakefield had formed the New Zealand Association and spent most of years following directing the affairs of the association from England while his brother William Hayward Wakefield directed and managed it from New Zealand. Binding worn, boards detached but present, browning of text, some excisions in margins of a few pages including the title, bookplates removed, with an inscription on both volumes reading "1835/ To be returned in a Fortnight/ Mr. Adam, President" else a very good copy.

2 Volumes in 1. 8vo. pp. xii, 331, [1]; iv, 341, [1] + [2]ads. A nice copy in original blind-stamped cloth, recased preserving endleaves (paper spine label rubbed, slight fraying to lower spine & corners, occasional light foxing, inner front hinge cracked). Inscribed from the Author. First Edition. A detailed examination of the social state and political economy of England and America, with discussion of free trade, slavery and emigration. Included is an elaboration of Wakefield's theory of systematic colonization (a method of planned emigration combined with the sale of crown lands), particularly in relation to Australia and Canada. His persistent efforts led to the establishment of successful settlements based on his theory in South Australia and New Zealand. Wakefield also played a significant role in Canadian political history. In 1838, he accompanied Lord Durham to Canada as his unofficial adviser, and the celebrated Durham Report, though drawn up by Charles Buller, embodied in slightly modified form, Wakefield's theories of colonial self- government and land settlement.
