Translated by Helen Watney, Photographs by Alexander Paul. Contents: Illustrations in the Text - List of Plates - Bibliography - Glass-painting and the Artist - The Religious-Cult Origin of Pictures - From Professional to Folk Paintings - Folk Techniques - What Patterns Contributed to Pictures - The Value of the Folk Character of Pictures - Looking for the Artistic Value - Topography and Production Spheres - The Bohemian Forest and Western Bohemia - Southern Bohemia and the Pohori (Buchers) School - Ceskomoravska Vysocina (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands) and Heralec - The Zdanice and South Moravian Sphere - The Sphere of Frydek near Ostrava - The Silesian Mountain Belt and Opava - Kladsko and the Orlicke Mountains - North Bohemian Workshops - Western Slovakia Central and Eastern Slovakia - Periodization of Pictures and Conclusion. With this book the well-known expert Professor Vydra adds another interesting chapter to the history of folk art, to which he has already made two outstanding contributions in his books on Indigo Blue Print and Painting on Folk Ceramics. The advent of coloured prints at the end of the nineteenth century caused the popularity of paintings on glass to wane but, although the creators of this art have now sunk into oblivion, their work remains to bear testimony to the artistic maturity and strength to which they attained. Originating from the cult of holy pictures, sold in places of pilgrimage, painting on glass became one of the most widespread of folk arts, perrneating the whole of Europe. From being souvenirs of pilgrimages, fulfilling a religious function, they eame to have an aesthetic value also, giving a natural expression, in new forms and colours, to the people's own fantasies and desire for beauty. Thus, far from being a mere transcription of higher art and a copying of artificial patterns, they were imbued with the personality, feelings and opinions of the folk artists themselves, who were able to master their themes, poetize them and give them a new content. Professor Vydra deals with the various techniques, patterns and regional styles of painting on glass in Czechoslovakia and discusses their artistic value. The text and the 40 coloured and 112 black-and-white reproductions, which have been executed with great care, give a complete and comprehensive picture of this little-known but important and artistically valuable branch of folk art.
