Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 225-268. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding a little light-margined, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Since the publication of my Notes on Longinus Peri Ypsous (Mnemos. IV 12, 1959, 54 ff.), much work has been done for the elucidation of this treatise. In the same year appeared Grube s valuable article on Theodorus of Gadara (Am. Journ. Phil. 1959, 337 ff.), settling definitively, in my opinion, a difficult question about the background of the work. Segal s study of the problem of cultural decline (Harv. St. Cl. Phil. 64, 1959, 121 ff.) shed light on some notions to be found in the treatise and was very helpful for the understanding of the last chapter. But especially the last two years have been extremely fruitful. In 1963 appeared H. D. Blume, Untersuchungen zu Sprache und Stil der Schrift Peri Ypsous as Troger s excellent and still very valuable Sprachgebrauch dates from 1899-1900, a new study of the subject is very welcome. Blume s careful examination will undoubtedly prove highly useful. In 1964 W. Bühler published his Beiträge zur Erklärung der Schrift vom Erhabenen, a very learned and acute study of some selected chapters. His book appeared almost simultaneously with Russell s edition (see below) ; the two authors, however, have found an opportunity to compare notes before their books went to the press. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 22-32. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In 1965 Mr. Gow and Professor Page published their Hellenistic Epigrams (cp. this journal, 1967, 329). The Garland of Philip followed in 1968: the authors as well as the publishers are to be congratulated upon this achievement and to be thanked for it (the rumour that no continuation may be expected is the more bitter for that). No space is available here for a proper review of these bulky volumes. Let it only be stated that they follow the same pattern and show the same merits as the preceding ones: an excellent introduction which treats with admirable lucidity of the many problems that meet a student of the Anthology, terse comments and good indexes. Two features are new, compared with the preceding volumes: a) literary assessment is made (K. J. McKay s complaint, uttered in Aumla 26, 1966, 307, is implicitly acknowledged as being justified); b) a translation of the epigrams has been added not in verses, one is glad to state (Beckby s polished distichs are very seldom a real help for understanding the Greek text), but in deliberately simple prose: "The translations are intended merely to show what we suppose the meaning to be . Elegance of style, which could only be achieved by loose paraphrase, is incompatible with this humble utilitarian purpose . . ." (Vol. I, p. VIII). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband berieben, Kleberest, sonst sauber. Crito's impression of young Clinias is that he has grown up and does not differ much in elikia from Critobulus. Is it his age that is meant? Such is the opinion of Gif., Mér. and Robin (Oeuvres complètes de Platon, translation with notes in the 'Bibliothèque de la Pléiade'). Mrs. Sprague, however, though not excluding the possibility that Clinias' age is meant, translates "to be almost of a size with''. Rightly, in my opinion, for though elikia in all its further occurrences in Plato denotes age, elikos is used of size in Rep. 423 b and Laws 933 e. In the present passage the meaning 'size' would square very well with the much-disputed next words. - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. November 1905 in Haastrecht; 7. But at a given moment things become too difficult fot them and they withdraw, begging Socrates to take their part in the discussion with Nicias and Laches. The outcome of this discusion will condition their decision concerning the education of their sons. Lysimachus plays on his age as an excuse for his withdrawal (189c). - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. November 1905 in Haastrecht; 7. Not "before whom even the dogs stand shivering" (Gow, similarly Legrand). The dog was, in Greek eyes, characterized by shamelessness, not by fearlessness. So why "even" ? Dogs were used in sacrifices to chthonian deities. It would be trivial to say that this is the reason why the dogs are howling at Hecate s approach. Fritzsche-Hiller rightly reject this explanation. Their own, however, "weil es ihnen unheimlich ist im Mondenschein", is not satisfactory either. Whence the uncanny feeling ? It is the very association of dogs with chthonian powers which is marked in the present passage: kai serves to emphasize the close link between the relative and the main clauses. It is 'Ekáta chthonía who is nearing, and the dogs shiver. - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. November 1905 in Haastrecht; 7. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding light-margined, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Many interpreters of Homer and commentators on his poems describe Odysseus stay in Scheria in idyllic terms: almost at the end of his labours, the hero finds a provisional rest amidst kind people. G. P. Rose was not the first one to defend a different view; he is, however, the most outspoken, and his reaction is extreme. He argues that Odysseus in Scheria finds himself amidst an unkind and unfriendly people whom he mistrusts, and that it costs him a hard struggle to make himself accepted. In view of these interpretations it may be useful to reexamine the relevant passages in the Odyssey with special attention to Phaeacian behaviour. - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, 1 typogr. corr., otherwise good and clean. - From the text:It is sufficiently known how much good work on Greek and Latin stylistics has been done during our century in Northern countries, especially in Sweden and Finland. Our understanding of Greek prose, Hellenistic prose in the first place, has been deepened by it. Among the scholars who by their labours in this field have earned our thanks, Professor Holger Thesleff (Helsinki) has distinguished himself. He started by publishing two monographs in which the (necessary) combination of a stylistic and a syntactical approach proved itself useful. After several years spent on inquiries into Hellenistic pseudepigraphical literature, he returned to his former studies, paying special attention to Plato. A book, Studies in the Styles of Plato, appeared in 1967; several papers followed, and quite recently he published an article on Colloquial Style and Its Use in Plato s Later Works. I will not attempt a full discussion of the paper s contents, as this would run to a very great length; for brevity s sake I offer only some notes which mainly bear on the author s interpretation of the final passages of Plato s Phaedrus. - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. Fine set. - This set discusses the history of the first 20 years of the IMF. It attempts to recount objectively what were its origins and what have been its plans and activities. It contains a chronological account of the evolution of the IMF from the original plans formulated in 1941 to the end of 1965, with a supplementary chapter summarizing subsequent events. It analyzes the IMF's policies in three major fields and reviews its constitutional development; Volume 3 comprises documents relating to the history of the IMF, including some that preceded the drafting of the Articles of Agreement. The paper highlights that the first draft of Lord Keynes' plan for a Clearing Union was circulated within the British Treasury on September 8, 1941. A fourth draft was given to Ministers on February 11, 1942. The first definitive version of Mr. White's plan for a stabilization fund was a mimeographed draft dated April 1942. This covered both the IMF and the World Bank. Condition : very good copy. Keywords : ECONOMICS,

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding with some light margins, author de Vries' name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: J.D. Moore: "Words about wisdom bring me both profit and delight. But you who speak only of money and business enjoy an empty facade of success; you cause me pain and provoke my pity . In these terms roughly, Apollodorus, narrator of Plato s Symposium, attacks his nameless companions, near the beginning of the dialogue (173c 2-d 3). The attack is abrupt and apparently unwarranted, for his companions have shown an interest in philosophy. These unnamed money-making enthusiasts have urged Apollodorus to narrate for them and hence for us the lengthy account of Agathon s banquet; and they will prove an ideal audience, for, as the narration proceeds, we shall not hear another word from them; we shall perhaps feel that we have taken their place that Apollodorus speaks directly to us. It is puzzling that such fleeting figures should be so attacked. - G. J. de Vries: Professor Moore s paper gives me the opportunity to restate my opinion about a difficult passage; this is a cause for gratitude. Another is his kindness in calling my inaccuracy a typographical error. It was not, I think, misleading , as I criticized Wilamowitz and Pasquali, and defended the reading malakos. There was one more error (sauton te for sauto te) which might have been misleading but for the words 'explanatory asyndeton . - Wikipedia: Gerrit Jacob de Vries (* 28. November 1905 in Haastrecht; 7.
