First British edition of von Wieser's great sociological study. Octavo, original cloth. Translated by A. Ford Hinrichs. Preface by Wesley Clair Mitchell. In very good condition with the spine gilt bright. Wieser's two main contributions to economic theory are the theory of "imputation," establishing that factor prices are determined by output prices and the theory of "alternative cost" or "opportunity cost" as the foundation of value theory. Both are fundamental "subjectivist" pillars in Neoclassical theory which were effectively ignored by Alfred Marshall and the "real cost" British theorists.

Translated by A. Ford Hinrichs. With a Preface by Wesley Clair Mitchell. First edition in English, UK issue. 8vo. xxii, 470 pp. Original red cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, ruling continued to front cover in blind (neat contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper, recent pencilled ownership inscription to front pastedown, thin stirp of faint partial offsetting to endpapers, otherwise internally clean and unmarked; corners of front cover gently bumped, else a near fine, notably bright copy). London, George Allen & Unwin. Originally published as Theorie der gesellschaftlichen Wirtschaft in 1914, Social Economics is perhaps one of the greatest statements of the Austrian school of economics. Writing in his preface, the great American economist Wesley C. Mitchell remarked: 'In the literature of the Austrian school it merits the place held by Mill?s Political Economy in the literature of the classical school. It sums up, systematizes and extends the doctrines previously worked out by the author, his master and his fellow disciples' (p. ix). The present English translation was printed in New York by the Aldephi Company and was issued in the UK by George Allen & Unwin using the sheets of the first edition with a cancel title page.

First edition in English. 8vo (228 x 150mm). xlv, [1], 243, [1], pp. Original brick red pebble grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, boards with triple blind filet borders, black coated endpapers (spine gently rubbed at head and tail, else a very good copy indeed). London, Macmillan and Co. Originally published in 1889, one of Wieser's most important early works, further outlining his theories of marginal utility, alternative cost and imputation as initially expressed in his first book, Über den Ursprung und die Hauptgesetze des wirtschaftlichen Werthes (1884). In Natural Value, Wieser ?employed the expository device of studying value in a centrally directed economy and suggested possible applications of utility theory to public finance. The book gained him almost immediate acclaim, and it was soon translated into English? (Friederich von Hayek in IESS). Provenance: from the library of the Fraser Institute, one of the world's leading public policy think tanks. With the Fraser Institute bookplate to the front pastedown, presented by John Henry Robinson Molson (1826-1897), Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Erstausgabe
First edition of a classic of economics, in which the author attempts to apply marginal utility analysis to the determination of cost. Wieser (1851-1926) was one of the leading exponents of the Austrian, or "subjective", school of economics. Together with his fellow-student and brother-in-law Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, he developed the ideas of Carl Menger and made the Austrian school of marginal utility widely known. In his first book, Über den Ursprung und die Hauptgesetze des wirtschaftlichen Werthes (1884), which already foreshadowed theories of the present work, Wieser introduced the term Grenznutzen (marginal utility). The book earned him a lectureship at the University of Vienna. "Here he continued to work on the same problems and also on what he regarded merely as a first step toward a theory of value that was to be fully developed in [the present work]. He employed the expository device of studying value in a centrally directed economy and suggested possible applications of utility theory to public finance. The book gained him almost immediate acclaim, and it was soon translated into English" (Frederich von Hayek in IESS). Masui p. 909; Menger col. 395. Octavo. Original yellow wrappers printed in black. Bookseller's ticket to verso of front cover and Japanese ownership stamp to title page. Rebacked with most of the original spine laid down (text of title all present), large chips to covers sympathetically repaired with new paper, though with slight loss to publisher's details on recto of front cover and advertisements on verso, closed tears on covers repaired on verso. Pages toned as usual, a few instances of faint foxing, tiny chips to pp. 231-236 not affecting text. A very good copy of this fragile volume, expertly restored.
Wien, Alfred Hölder, 1889. 8vo. Uncut in the original printed yellow wrappers. Light soiling and a few minor nicks to extremities. A very fine and clean copy. XVI, 239 pp. First edition, rarely seen in the original wrappers, of this important work in which Wieser attempts to apply marginal utility analysis to the determination of cost, thus for the first time fully developing a theory of value. The work "ranks high as an original achievement" and is one of the very earliest to realize the information value of prizes. It is furthermore here that the term "imputation" is coined."It was only with Friedrich von Wieser's book [the present] that an attempt was made to fill the lacuna left by Menger and Böhm-Bawerk. Wieser makes it clear that without a solution to the problem of 'imputation' the new theory would remain incomplete and would be subjected to the widespread criticism that it cannot deal with production. The problem is posed as follows" 'The statement that the productive goods receive their value from the value of their produce suffices only to evaluate [schätzen] the collaborating factors of production as a whole, but not separately. In order to be able to do also this, a rule is needed which allows one to apportion the total produce in detail.'(Wieser, 1889)." (Steedman, Socialism & Marginalism in Economics 1870 - 1930). "[H]e continued to work on the same problems and also on what he regarded merely as a first step toward a theory of value that was to be fully developed in [the present work]. He employed the expository device of studying value in a centrally directed economy and suggested possible applications of utility theory to public finance. The book gained him almost immediate acclaim, and it was soon translated into English" (Frederich von Hayek in IESS)."[In the present work he] worked out the Austrian theories of cost and distribution (he coined the phrase 'Zurechnung', imputation), which Menger had not more than sketched, and this work must in spite of the latter fact and also in spite of glaring faults of technique, rank high as an original achievement. (Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis)"In this work he applied the marginal utility theory not only horizontally, i.e. to trading and exchange, but also vertically, i.e. to production processes. He defined the value of higher goods produced alongside them, thus developing his imputation theory. Wieser, who possessed a certain "obsession with compulsive computability" is recognized as one of the first economist to realize the information value of prices." (Schulak, the Austrian School of Economics). Masui p. 909Menger col. 395.
