Er kann nachweisen, dass die Kathodenstrahlen aus negativ geladenen Teilchen bestehen, deren Masse 1800mal kleiner ist als die des Wasserstoffatoms. Er wird damit zum Entdecker des Elektrons, das er aber bis 1907 als "Korpuskel" bezeichnet. "Damit hatte er die Physik revolutioniert. Es gab kein 'unzerstörbares' Atom mehr und es fing an, wahrscheinlich zu werden, daß der allgemeine Baustoff aller Materie eine Form von Energie war.
