Hardcover. Zustand: g to vg. Oblong quarto (9 1/2 x 11 3/4"). [3] leaves (blank), [20] leaves (Photographs), [3] leaves (blank). Original gilt-stamped brown morocco presentation binding with circular designs and gold lettring to front cover. Raised bands. In twenty striking photographs by Heinrich Hoffmann (Adolf Hitler's personal photographer), this photo album documents the construction of the Führer's "Haus der Deutschen Kunst" (House of German Art), from Hitler laying the first cornerstone, to the Museum's opening on July 18, 1937. The House of German Art was intended as a showcase for what the Nazi Party regarded as Germany's finest art. The inaugural exhibition, the "Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung" (Great German Art Exhibition), was regarded by Nazis as an edifying contrast to the condemned modern art on display in the concurrent "Entartete Kunst Ausstellung" (Degenerate Art Exhibition). The photo album opens with a photographic portrait of the architect Paul Ludwig Troost (1879-1934), followed by a maquette of the building, and Adolf Hitler examining the maquette. The remaining photographs show officials in conference; ground-breaking ceremonies; building under construction, as well as various exterior and interior scenes during the opening ceremony. Each photograph measures 4 3/4 x 6 3/4" and is mounted with overlaying mat. Binding somewhat partly darkened and soiled, with some sporadic abrasion to leather. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good, interior in good+ to very good, photographs in very good condition.
