Zustand: Gut. XVI, 209 S. / p., VI plates Umschlag mit Randläsuren, innen gut und sauber / Cover with marginal tears, inside good and clean - The Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum is the first attempt to collect all papyri and ostraka from Egypt that concern Jews or Judaism. The publication of isolated papyri, though important for the study of the history of the Jews in Egypt, has sometimes given an incorrect impression, and only a systematic collection of all the available material can provide a lull and detailed picture of the life of the Jews in Egypt in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times. -- The primary object of the Corpus is to establish the correct texts of all the documents included in it. The second object is to furnish commentaries to individual papyri, and to groups of papyri and ostraka. In accordance with the general aim of the Corpus, much space has been allotted to matters directly related to jews and Judaism. -- The Corpus consists of three volumes. The first contains the Prolegomena and the documents of the Ptolemaic period; the second covers the Early Roman period; the third contains besides the documents of the Late Roman and Byzantine periods, three appendixes and six plates illustrating selected documents. It is hoped that the Corpus Papyrorum judaicarum will serve the interests of papyrological research and be of special interest to historians and theologians. But the Corpus should also be of service to the non-specialized reader. With that end in view a general introduction ( the Prolegomena ) is offered in Volume I containing a survey of Jewish life in Egypt in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
