Zustand: Gut. 175 S.; 30,5 cm; fadengeh. Orig.-Pappband. Gutes Ex.; Einband etwas nachgedunkelt. - Englisch. - Aus der Bibliothek von Dr. H. J. Koloß / Völkerkunde-Museum Berlin. - . My interest in African waterfolk had been aroused by the accounts of die "gens d'eau" of the Upper Congo and Uelle published around 1910 by Calonne de Befaict, Coquilhat, and Vedy. They presented the Bangala and the Bacango as small independent groups dominating the area economically and staying independent of their numerically dominant landlocked neighbours. The key to their position appeared to be their technical monopoly of water transport. Their independence largely rested on their living in islands and inaccessible marshlands, inaccessible, that is, to anybody without watercraft. Their milieu on one hand offered excellent shelter but on the other it was definitely unsuitable for agriculture. The question naturally presented itself whether this type of milieu was chosen purely for its virtues as an asylum. Furthermore : "waterfolk" was used in many parts of Africa, the European terms being as a rule straight translations of terms used by local "land people". Such descriptive ethnic names based on economic function are common in Africa, typical examples being the designations of trader groups such as the Hausa hausa and Dioula dioula, which at the same time designate an ethnic group and a profession, the latter regardless of ethnic origins. .
