This book traces the history of New York through changes to its natural environment including wilderness and lakes but also cities and canals. While the author feels strongly about such things as urban sprawl and Love Canal, he strikes a balance between the desire to return the world to a pristine state and finding the best ways for people to positively affect their environment. Starting with Native Americans on the eve of colonization, he looks at indigenous species and those brought by the Europeans. The drive for profit characterizes the next stage of development, especially with the creation of the Erie Canal. Next he turns to the images of New York nature by artists and poets, particularly the Hudson River school, and their role in romanticizing the landscape. The disregard for both people and the land by Gilded Age industrialists comes next, along with the growth of governmental controls. The conservation movement, beginning in the early 1800s but coming to fruition under President Theodore Roosevelt, a New Yorker, is examined. The reflection in New York of post-war ecological movements rounds out the study, with a postscript tying the environment to the goals of improved living conditions in urban environments and the role of women in ecological movements, with the example of Lois Gibbs and the scandal of Love Canal.
