First edition, first impression of this work by the British army officer and colonial administrator C. H. Stigand (1877-1919). Stigand was commissioned into the Royal West Kent Regiment in 1899, serving in Burma and Somaliland before travelling to British East Africa with the King's African Rifles in 1901. He joined the Egyptian Army in 1910 and was given control of the Lado Enclave on the Upper White Nile, later serving as governor of the entire Upper Nile province from 1917 to 1918. In 1919 he was appointed governor of Mongalla, modern-day South Sudan, and was killed on patrol the same year during the Aliab Dinka uprising. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and rules to spine gilt, rules to boards in blind. With dust jacket. Extremities gently sunned and bumped, endpapers lightly tanned, slight foxing to prelims and endmatter, occasional minor spotting to margins of text block. An excellent copy in a chipped and nicked jacket with sunned spine panel, some light creasing to extremities, and a 11 cm long split along front fold.
