In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Stephen Raw [Jacket design] (illustrator). First UK Edition. First printing of the true first edition - published in the UK in 1987. There was no equivalent US edition. The last work to be published by Raymond Carver before his untimely death the following year. Poems selected by the author. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, with a light vertical reading crease to the spine. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Corners sharp. Edges of page block have a few handling marks. Internally the book is also near fine, with no inscriptions. No other marks or annotations. No creases or tears. Printed on nice quality thick paper. ***In a very good colour-printed typographical dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of £11.50 net. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips or tears, just some minimal rubbing and creasing at the edges, with a small nick to the bottom edge of the back panel. The dustwrapper is marked from handling, particularly on the back panel (being a pale cream background) but unfaded even on the spine. ***206 pages. 221mm x 142mm. ***'Raymond Carver is a brilliant exponent of the short story. His creations "can already be counted among the masterpieces of American fiction"' (New York Times). His poetry is no less impressive. "In a Marine Light," the first collection of his poetry to be published outside America, is his own selection of recent work. Like his short stories, Raymond Carver's poems show a matchless talent for taking ordinary people, ordinary scenes, and making them seem extraordinary, strange, indelible. His ear for colloquial narration and dialogue is flawless. Raymond Carver's poetry is also striking in its range and variety whether he is writing "stories" about marginal lives of quiet desperation or exuberant celebrations of love, friendship and the simplicities pf everyday life. "In a Marine Light" fully affirms his high standing among contemporary writers.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first printing of the true first edition, published in the UK by Collins Harvill. A nice copy of this final Raymond Carver poetry collection, in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Selected and introduced by Stephen Carver 'The beauty of the scene was strangely uplifting. Yet, ever at the back of his thoughts, lay that other aspect of the wilderness: the indifference to human life, the merciless spirit of desolation which took no note of man.' - The Wendigo 'Of the quality of Mr. Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute . he is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere.' - H.P. Lovecraft Algernon Blackwood (1869 - 1951) - 'The Ghost Man' - was a British broadcaster, journalist, traveller, mystic, and paranormal investigator, and, above all, a prolific author of weird, occult, and supernatural fiction. Often, he wrote about the untamed wilderness, from deserts to vast, primeval forests, vividly depicting a natural environment that is at once awe-inspiring, alien and hostile. Many of Blackwood's most famous tales - such as The Wendigo and 'The Willows' (both included in this collection) - are set in the empty places of the world. Like his psychic detective 'John Silence', Blackwood was fascinated by elemental spirits, reincarnation, other dimensions, and higher states of consciousness. Wherever such things broke through, he sought them out, and now so can you in this comprehensive collection of his short fiction. As Blackwood explained himself: 'I believe it possible for our consciousness to change and grow, and that with this change we may become aware of a new universe.'
