First edition of the novel of the landmark â proverbial good science fiction movieâ he and Stanley Kubrick created. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Arthur C. Clarke on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. â Kubrick wrote to me in the spring of 1964, asking if I had any ideas that would enable him to make the â proverbial good science fiction movieâ ¦ I had already given Stanley a list of my shorter pieces, and we had decided that oneâ "â The Sentinelâ â "contained a basic idea on which we could buildâ ¦ Stanley suggested that before we embarked on the drudgery of the script, we let our imaginations soar freely by writing a complete novel, from which we could devise the script. This is more or less the way it worked out, though toward the end, novel and screenplay were being written simultaneously, with feedback in both directions. Thus, I rewrote some sections after seeing the movie rushesâ "a rather expensive method of literary creation, which few other authors have enjoyedâ (Clarke). With the success of both film and book, Clarke â became perhaps the best-known science fiction writer in the worldâ (Clute & Nicholls, 231). His novel (the first in an eventual tetraology) is â about the two things Clarke seems to think we mortals would most like to know in a universe in which we can only hope that the odds are in favor of the raceâ s survival: that we are not alone and that we have not lived in vainâ (John Hollow). Clarke wrote this novel while Stanley Kubrick created the film, the two collaborating on both projects. The novel is much more detailed and intimate, and definitely easier to comprehend. Even though history has disproved its "predictions," it's still loaded with exciting and awe-inspiring science fiction. -Brooks Peck Dazzling.wrenching.a mind-bender" (Time). "By standing the universe on its head, he makes us see the ordinary universe in a different light" (New Yorker). 2001: A Space Odyssey is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Sight & Sound magazine ranked 2001: A Space Odyssey sixth in the top ten films of all time in its 2002 and 2012 critics' polls editions; it also tied for second place in the magazine's 2012 directors' poll. In 2010, it was named the greatest film of all time by The Moving Arts Film Journal).

Archive including 20 vintage linen-backed production photographs, a trade advertisement, a film program, and a souvenir booklet from the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." From the collection of NASA scientific consultant Frederick I. Ordway III, with images prominently featuring Ordway, production designer Harry Lange, Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick, and others. One photograph has Ordway's name written on the recto, in silver marker. All photographs mounted on matte board, as issued. Ordway and Clarke began working together on matters of science fact in 1951, and Clarke personally invited him to be the factual advisor on the film. Kubrick's sprawling, science fiction epic traces the evolution of human intelligence under the influence of an unspecified alien force. Along with "Blade Runner," Kubrick's masterpiece forever altered the standard for visual and conceptual sophistication in science fiction and genre films. The pre-production for the film set standards as well, as Kubrick hired one of the greatest science fiction authors of the 1960s, Arthur C. Clarke, to be his screenwriter, and hired over 20 scientists like Ordway to consult on every detail of the film. The film's high degree of scientific accuracy, coupled with bleeding-edge special effects and minimal use of dialogue, make "2001" universally recognized as one of the most influential films ever made. The development of the film was kept strictly under wraps, and behind-the-scenes material of any kind is rare. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, and nominated for three others including Best Director. Set in space, shot on location in Scotland, England, Arizona, and Utah. Photographs 8 x 10 inches, mounted on 11 x 14 inch matte board. Trade advertisement 9 x 12 inches, full-color, creased. Souvenir booklet 7.25 x 16 inches, full-color, 12 leaves, saddle stapled, folded. Program 5.5 x 8.5 inches, black and white, saddle stapled single leaf. Very Good to Near Fine.
