His first article *), which appeared on October 28, 1846, preceded all the famous reports on "insensibility" by at least three weeks. Smilie actually administered ether and opium by inhalation to abolish pain in surgery, but he considered the ether to be only a vehicle and attributed the analgesic effect to the opium. Smilie wrote: 'As it is frequently found desirable to produce insensibility in persons requiring painful operations, I have made use of the ethereal solution of opium for that purpose, with excellent success, when reduced to vapor by gentle heat, varying the amount inhaled according to the length of time required for the operation; and from the entire absence of symptoms induced by pain, and those which usually result from the excessive use of opium, I have thought the method of preparation and exhibition invaluable in removing the dread in severe, and the minor operations of surgery.' The first public demonstration of ether anesthesia in a surgical operation was carried out on October 16th, and it may be assumed that Smilie was aware of this attempt; however, whether his report was a response to that demonstration or an independent observation remains historical conjecture." An Indonesian cult believes that humanity's woes result from the loss of its tail (shades of Lord Monbodo) and attempts surgical reattachment, resulting in an Ape-Man race of Kubu Orangs who co-exist with missionaries and pirates in a science fiction version of Sumatra. The book is a sequel to The Manatitlans, in which white explorers discover a Lost Race in South America. Mark Twain had a copy of Investigations and Experience and may have known the author, a physician and dentist who invented an anesthetic that combined ether with opium (the latter ingredient being superfluous and inactive). He worked with William T.G. Morton on chloroform but soon left New England for California to participate in the Gold Rush, a very Mark Twain thing to do.…
