[Picture book 1]. Hans Reitzel/Thaning & Appel, Copenhagen 1966. 1st edition. 4°. 32 leaves on pink paper in orig. black wrappers with green fig leaf. Illustrated in b/w. In orig. slipcase. Slipcase repaired with tape. Otherwise fine. * In the 50s and 60s the Danish publisher Hans Reitzel acquired international recognition as a publisher of groundbreaking »naughty« books by among others Henry Miller and Jean Genet. This volume of coarse phallic humour was marked with a banderole expressly forbidding the export of the book out of [liberal] Scandinavia (not present here). One can imagine that in particular the French authorities were less than amused by Siné's irreverent use of his native Republic's sacred symbols.
Bon exemplaire. 1984.

Maurice Sinet, known as Siné, was a controversial French political cartoonist whose work was devoted to anti-capitalism, anti-clericalism, anti-colonialism, anti-semitism, and anarchism. He was fired by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2008 for a column targeting a son of then-President Nicolas Sarkozy that triggered accusations of anti-Semitism. He published his first cartoon in France Dimanche in 1952, and won the Black Humour Award for his collection Complainte sans Paroles in 1955. Siné became famous for his wordplay cartoons about cats.
