A fine copy in a near fine dust-jacket. The front pastedown has the label for A Louis de Meuleneere, 21, Rue du Chene, Bruxelles. This firm was a great Brussels booksellers and the predecessor to Tulkens from where this book was bought when it closed in 2008.

The foreword to this text was written by the notable British painter and theatre designer George Sheringham, who was one of the first recipients of the 'Royal Designers for Industry' distinction in 1937. In a charming cloth binding with an elaborate embossed design and gilt detailed borders to the front board. Featuring numerous library ink and blind stamps, to the 'L. G. G. Putney School of Art: Reference Library'. Collated, complete with twenty four tipped in coloured plates, each with a protective tissue guard. In the original cloth binding. Very slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight rubbing to rear joint and rear board. Institutional library marking to tail of spine. Library marking to front pastedown. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Protective tissue guard to plate 2 detached but present. Dark handling mark to extremity of plate 7. First illustrated edition of Beerbohm's celebrated modern fable, first published in The Yellow Book in 1896. Sheringham's illustrations, though somewhat anachronistic, still manage to capture the late-Decadent flavor of the tale.
