Buch
Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XI, 179 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, sonst gut und innen sauber / dust jacket rubbed, otherwise good and clean inside. - English culture is unique, but it is not home-grown. It has many roots, and the deepest and most sustaining of these has been in the civilizations of the Mediterranean. There seems to have been no time when England has not been in touch with the civilizations of Greece and Italy; even Stonehenge, the most dramatic survivor from our remotest past, has a carved dagger of Mycenean pattern among its ornaments. England first enters recorded history as part of the Roman Empire, and after two centuries of Gothic obscurity re-emerges under the Europeanizing cloak of the Roman Church. If the Italian re-birth of classical art and architecture in the fifteenth century took at least three centuries to infuse English life, the pace-setters among creative Englishmen - Shakespeare, polymaths like Sidney, even Milton - had clearly looked to Italy in their own time. In the generation after Milton, and throughout the eighteenth century, English grand tourists' found southern Europe irresistible, coming home with paintings and sculptures in their baggage, and their heads filled with plans for remodelling their houses and gardens in accordance with Italian taste. Their children and grandchildren - the patrons of Turner and Constable - looked beyond Italy, but still to the Mediterranean, and especially to Greece, for models of their self-confident public buildings. Byron, Shelley, Keats and other Romantics, all fell under the spell of the south, and passed on their attachment in some of the most passionate poetry in our language. For the Victorians, also, Greece and Italy evinced a strong attraction, even though nineteenth-century Italy must have represented everything they found most repugnant. Mediterranean Heritage is a wide-ranging and always perceptive book tracing these often concealed but always fruitful links with the common heritage of the Western world. Appearing at a time when England is more obviously a part of Europe than she has been for sixteen hundred years, it provides valuable insights into the makings of the greatest achievements of our civilization - our poetry and painting, our country houses, landscape and public buildings - and also, just as subtly and pervasively, into the making of us all. / CONTENTS PREFACE INTRODUCTION 1 MEDITERRANEAN APPROACHES 2 THE RENAISSANCE 3 THE AGE OF THE GRAND TOUR 4 ARCHITECTURE 5 PAINTING 6 ART INTO LANDSCAPE 7 ROMANTIC YEARNINGS 8 VICTORIANA 9 IN THE PRESENT DECLENSION BIBLIOGRAPHY NAME INDEX GENERAL INDEX.
