Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. No Jacket. 544 (last pages of index missing). A stoic copy. Ex-library (Port Alfred Public Library) copy with consequent wear, residue, labels, stamps, annotations, usage, marks. An aged but resolutely competent copy. The boards are worn and scuffed. They are secure. Within, the frontispage is absent. The front page is tanned and crisped but still sure. The binding at the page of the book is cracked and ajar, the bulk of the book is unaffected. The binding throughout the book is creaky. Yet, the pages are benign, calm, clear, benevolent and still most useful for reference and resource. fk. London, The Zoological Society of London, 1938-1949. 11 volumes in 11. 8vo (21.5 x 14.2 cm). Over 200 pp. Original, near uniform printed wrappers. = A long, continuous run of this seldom seen segment of the famous Zoological Records. The volumes cover the years 1936 to 1946. The first two were edited by the ornithologist Sclater, the subsequent volumes by others. The first three include the names of (new) zoological periodicals, and their standard abbreviations - those following only include new genus-level names in all groups covered by the Zoological Record, as well as enumerations thereof. Front wrappers with library markings, one wrapper a bit abraded, otherwise good, complete copies. Rare.
London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner, 1899. 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm). xviii, 335 pp.; eight large, folded, tinted maps, engraved frontispiece by Joseph Smit (tissue-guarded), 50 text engravings. 60 pp. publisher's catalogue (dated Jan. 1899) bound in rear. Original dark green, embossed cloth. Spine with gilt title. = An early major contribution to the subject of mammalian zoogeography. Written by father Philip Lutley and son William Lutley Sclater. Philip is best known as an ornithologist. Well-illustrated. The engravings, by the famous Dutch natural history artist Joseph Smit (1836-1929) are excellent. Included are, e.g. the giant panda (under another, then far better known name, the tasmanian wolf, etc., etc.). Uncut. Front and rear free endpaper a little bit foxed. Otherwise a fine copy. Rare in this state.
