From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Plotinus (AD 205-270) was an Egyptian, educated in Alexandria, who followed the Emperor Gordian to Persia, where he seems to have learned something of Iranian and even Brahman philosophies. After the Emperor was assassinated, Plotinus turned back West and finally settled in Rome, where he met the philosopher Amelius and became a friend of the Emperor Gallienus (AD 253-68). In Rome, Plotinus studied Plato and Aristotle. He sought to harmonize them. Before the Emperor s death, Plotinus attempted to found a model city in the Campania, modeled on Plato s Republic. But he seems to have settled it in a malaria-infested area and died shortly thereafter. His last words, typical of him, were to his friend and physician, Eustochius: "I was waiting for you, that you might help to bring the Divine in me to the Divine in the all." - RÉSUMÉ Il appartient à la philosophie politique d identifier et de défendre l autonomie relative de l ordre civil. La «modération» de la théorie politique classique contraste avec les philosophies post-aristotéliennes du «retrait» qui nièrent la proposition aristotélienne selon laquelle l homme est par nature un être politique. Plotin, sans être formellement un philosophe politique, a cherché à rendre compte de toute la réalité, la réalité politique y inclue, en termes d émanations mystiques de tout à partir du Bien. La politique présupposant sa sphère propre, les philosophies politiques plus récentes, idéalistes et matérialistes, ont interprété cette structure comme absorption totale du réel en un seul tout. La politique devient un aspect de la métaphysique.
