Scarce early edition, first published in 1876. In the publisher's decorative original red cloth, with a colour frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations from Phiz, the creator behind many Dickens illustrations. Publisher's advertisements to the rear. (George Routledge & Sons, 1878).- Afternoon Tea, an illustrated collection of verses, written by British painter and illustrator John George Sowerby, including In the Meadows and The Runaway Ring, amongst many other nursery rhymes. First edition. In quarter cloth, with pictorial paper boards. Contains numerous in-text and full page colour illustrations throughout, by both Sowerby and fellow accomplished painter Henry Hetherington Emmerson. (Frederick Warne and Co., 1880).- Stiggles, a lovely little children's book about two children and their donkey, written by K.K. de Karloff and illustrated by Margery Colman. First edition. In grey pictorial paper boards. Contains colour illustrated pages throughout. (Faber and Faber Limited, 1943). In the publisher's decorative original red cloth (Saxby), quarter cloth with pictorial boards (Sowerby) and grey pictorial paper boards (Karloff). Externally, mostly smart, with slight fading to the spine and to the extremities, a little heavier to Karloff. The odd mark to boards of Sowerby, and signs of browning. Slight edgewear, and rubbing to joints of Sowerby and Saxby. Offsetting to free end papers of Saxby and Sowerby, heavier to Saxby, with the odd spot and minor browning to end papers of Karloff. End paper hinges have failed to Sowerby. Internally, generally firmly bound, with leaves pp.17-40 disbound from Sowerby and hinge between leaves 32-33 loosening. Pages are bright and clean, with minor age toning, and the small faint spot to first couple leaves of Saxby. Good. Phiz [Hablot K Browne]; J. G. Sowerby, H. H. While shunning the limelight, Newcastle was an influential figure in British politics; it was through his lobbying that his cousin Sir Henry Clinton was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution. According to Timothy Mowl's 1996 biography of Hora…ce Walpole, Newcastle was 'famed for an unusually large penis', which he deployed on both sexes. On one side of a 12 x 19 piece of laid paper, with large triangle cut at top right (not near signature). In good condition, lightly aged, with three neat fold lines (not through signature). Large clear signature 'Newcastle', between two short pieces of text in the hand of Henry Saxby, with his small neat signature 'Henry Saxby'. On the reverse is the 'Debentur' entry in Latin, with marginal note 'Out of 1/3 Tonns since 8th. March 1706.' In another hand at foot: 'Examd: Record: 11 Oct: 1773 [.]'. Most of the side with the signature is blank, with portrait orientation, while the entry side is filled with landscape text, with slight loss through diagonal crop at bottom right.
