A lovely scarce first edition copy of this fascinating history of Renaissance Rome in the period from the papacy of Julius II to that of Leo X by Emmanuel Rodocanachi. Emmanuel Rodocanachi was a French historian and biographer, one of the greatest specialists in the history of the city of Rome and of the papal government. His most notable works included 'Les corporations ouvrières de Rome' and his 'Histoire de Rome depuis 1342', and he was notably rewarded the French Legion of Honour. Containing a fascinating history of the Popes and the papal court, art, architecture, patronage, theater, the population, feasts, ceremonies, popular entertainments, customs and traditions, superstitions, and so forth. Collated, complete with copious illustrations throughout of notable Renaissance figures, art and photographic plates of notable buildings and scenes in the city. This text is written in French throughout. In a quarter crushed morocco binding with marbled paper over boards. Externally slightly bumped and rubbed to extremities. Small sections of rubbing to joints. Small section to rubbing of front board. Slight rubbing to leather of tail of spines and the raised bands. Tipped in library plate to front pastedown. Library stamp to front pastedown. Evidence of removal of tipped in plate to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound.
