Erstausgabe
Rotterdam, Arnout Leers, 1662, small in-4°, 21 x 16 cm, printed title page + (36) nn pp + 475 pp + (11)(index)nn pp + (2)(bl) + 6 engraved folding plates with 37 text-engravings (some full page). (Complete but for the engraved frontispiece). Contemporary overlapping vellum binding. Very nice crisp copy. Expanded Dutch translation of the first French edition (also Leers, 1658). The author, pastor of the French Protestant church at Rotterdam, resided in the West Indies several years. This book is one of the most important descriptions of the Antilles published in the 17th century. The first part deals extensively with the islands' natural history. Most of the folding plates depict local fishes. The second part contains an account of the European colonization of the Antilles and a detailed description of the manners, customs, religion and arts of the Caribs, the Apalachites etc. A vocabulary of the Carib language, compiled by Father R. Breton is found at the end. (See Tiele 926, Sabin 72320).
