Erstausgabe
First Rackham edition, publisher's special binding. The illustrations were described by Rackham as "so horrible I was beginning to frighten myself", and by the ODNB as having "a sharp edge of true horror, a re-emergent strain from the earlier Grimm and Wagner subjects". The collection includes tales such as "The Gold Bug", "The Masque of the Red Death", and "The Tell-Tale Heart". Riall records a publisher's special binding in "dark blue morocco" but neglects to mention this variant in dark green morocco. Latimore & Haskell, pp. 72-3; Riall, p. 189. Large quarto. Original dark green morocco, spine and front cover lettered and illustrated in gilt, mottled endpapers, top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine very slightly toned, browning to free endpapers, tear to preliminary blank, cracked at gutters after front and before rear endpapers: a very good copy.
