È possibile morire annegati in una stanza nella quale non c'è nemmeno una goccia d'acqua? No, naturalmente, ma nell'antica dimora di Friar's Pardon sembra che la cosa sia capitata più volte. La leggenda, infatti, narra che in una determinata camera da letto ben cinque persone sono decedute in quel modo inspiegabile. Ma Enid Lester-Greene, la famosa romanziera che ha appena acquistato la villa, non crede alle leggende. "Dimostrerò a tutti che si tratta solo di sciocchezze!", dichiara a un giornale e inizia i lavori di restauro. L'ala della dimora nella quale erano avvenute le morti misteriose viene riportata all'antico splendore. E a lavori ultimati un gruppo di parenti e amici viene invitato a trascorrere qualche giorno nella villa. Ci sono il fratello della padrona di casa, la figlia, la nipote, il segretario particolare, il nuovo amministratore, una vecchia amica e un giovane barone. Ben presto alcuni strani avvenimenti turbano la serenità degli ospiti: porte che si aprono nonostante siano chiuse a chiave, oggetti che scompaiono, mani sospese nel vuoto che battono alle finestre.
