Erstausgabe
First edition. Elephant Folio. 6 leaves, xlii, (8) 153, 14 plates, incl. frontispiece; 206 (4)pp., 22 plates. Original full calf with blind-stamped ruling on covers, gilt lettering, tooling and ruling on spine; raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece engraving. First title page printed in red and black with publisher's device, second in black with publisher's device. Decorative initials. Historiated and decorative head- and endpieces. The ceremonies and religious customs of all the people of the world with hand-drawn figures mainly by Bernard Picard. Contains historical explanations and some curious dissertation. Includes thirteen pates depicting Jewish, twenty-three depicting Catholic customs. As the title suggests, the series sought to "capture the ritual and ceremonial life of all the known religions of the world. Because Bernard chose to remain anonymous as author, the work has long been catalogued under the name of its engraver, Picard. "Picart," as many readers called it, helped create the study of comparative religion and had a long-lasting influence on the representations of the world's religions in the West." For more information, see UCLA's "The Origins of Comparative Religion: Bernard and Picard's Religious Ceremonies and Customs of All the Peoples of the World (1723-1743)." A detailed account on the religious ceremonies and customs of Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church. Chapters on Judaism, illustrated with thirteen plates, include the Sabbath, Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur, Hanukah, synagogues, Jewish prayers and many more. The double plate shows the dedication of the synagogue of Portuguese Jews in Amsterdam. A look at the Roman Catholic Church covers communion, baptism, canonizing, history and trials of the Inquisition, the Pope, congregations, funerals, choirs and much more, including the threefold plate of the pope joining the procession in front of the Vatican. Beautifully illustrated with thirty-six copperplate engravings, including one double-paged engraving in each part, and three folding plates in part two. Text in French. Binding with wear along edges, some fraying, scuffing and chipping along edges. Back joint cracked with closed tears at top of front joint and some damage to raised bands. Starting at inside covers. Some sporadic light browning of paper, very light sporadic foxing, and some small closed tears at folding plate folds. Binding in overall good-, interior in very good, engravings in near fine condition.
