An excellent example of a 19th century reference work, ideal for those with a passion for sport and sporting works. As stated in the preface of volume I the work includes a vast and eclectic array of sports, as well as subjects considered by the editors to be sporting 'corollaries', such as taxidermy and veterinary work. The work itself is profusely illustrated with numerous in-text illustrations, as well a numerous plates. In total, across the two volumes, there are 40 plates each engraved by Swan Electric Engraving Co. The set features several plates by the notable artist, A Thornburn. A very popular artist, he was predominantly known for watercolour paintings of wildlife, in particular birds. In this particular work, his illustrations can be seen accompanying sections on hunting and falconry. With the bookplate of E G Baron Lethbridge to the front pastedown of each volume. In a uniform cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Light rubbing also to front and rear boards of each volume. Very light spotting to the fore edge of each volumes. Light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers of each volume. Bookplate of E G Baron Lethbridge to the front pastedown of each volume.
