Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. 499 pp. Octavo [23.5 cm]; full maroon cloth covered boards with black ink stamped titles on the spine and front cover, bright orange endsheets. Book shows light signs of use and reading, still Very Good. Dust jacket is lightly stained and worn at its edges and corners, still Very Good. This copy is inscribed and signed by the author, Helen Z. Papanikolas, to one of the contributors, Frederick S. Buchanan, in the year of publication: "July 21, 1976 | For Fred who was the first and most diligent, my very best wishes. | Helen". Fred S. Buchanan's ownership signature is in ink at the top right hand corner of the front flyleaf. Buchanan has also penned a short note in neat blue ink (some information regarding the title of his chapter, "Imperial Zion") at the verso of the final page of the book. The book is additionally signed (or inscribed to Buchanan) by nine of the other contributors, all neatly in ink at their respective chapter headings/authorship attributions: Fred Conetah (at his chapter heading on p. 11), Clyde J. Benally (on p. 13), Floyd A. O'Neil (p. 27), William Mulder (p. 141), Davis Bitton (p. 221), Maureen Ursenbach (p. 279), Richard L. Jensen (p. 279), Philip F. Notarianni (p. 303), and Alice Kasai (p. 333). A remarkable association copy of this important work. This work is a fine collected publication of historical writings on the subject of early immigrant communities and immigration to the Utah territory. From the dust jacket: "The Peoples of Utah is a commemoration of the early peoples of Utah, the pioneers of many cultural strains, and the later immigrants. These remarkably diverse peoples have long merited a book-length study." "Helen Z. Papanikolas was born in the little town of Cameron, Carbon County [Utah], of Greek immigrant parents. Later, her family moved to Salt Lake City where she completed her education, receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah. She has written and lectured [and published] extensively on Utah history and folklore. [.] She is a member of the Board of State History, a Fellow of the Utah State Historical Society, and coordinator of the Greek Archives, Western American, Marriott Library, University of Utah. With her pioneering research, writing, and collecting of materials on immigrant culture, Mrs. Papanikolas has encouraged many young scholars to explore this important aspect of social history." "Frederick S. Buchanan. An immigrant from Scotland, Dr. Buchanan is an associate professor of cultural foundations of education at the University of Utah. He received his doctoral degree from Ohio State University. Professor Buchanan has written and lectured publicly on a variety of educational topics and on Scots in Utah."
