He graduated from the University of Pisa in 1866. As soon as he left university, he enlisted as a volunteer military doctor and took part in the '66 campaign; once this was over, he took up practical studies in Florence. He soon became director of the Sarzana Hospital where he was also a distinguished surgeon. In 1878, he was transferred to the University of Pisa, where he became assistant to the surgeon Pasquale Landi; in February 1884, he succeeded the late Prof. Giovanni Nistri in the special chair of Surgical Pathology as extraordinary, with an appointment made by the Minister of Education Guido Baccelli. Paci mainly dealt with orthopaedics and dedicated himself in particular to traumatic dislocations of the hip. He also published extensively on topics related to blood transfusions, hernias and skin transplants. Agostino Paci died at only 57 years of age, stricken with carcinoma of the tongue.
