Following the fortunes of Folle-Farine, an orphaned girl in provincial France who becomes a great beauty and, though pure and innocent, is much coveted by an array of unsavoury and lascivious men. It was highly praised by Bulwer Lytton in the year of his death.

Volume I includes an errata slip inserted before p.1, not mentioned by Sadleir or Wolff, which castigates the printers for 'many errors. which. disfigure the text of Puck'. Ouida, a dog-lover & anti-vivisectionist, wrote this monologue in the 'voice' of a 'garrulous and unusually philosophical dog'.
