Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1847. Folio (33.8 x 25.1 cm). 13 lithographed plates, numbered: 1-13 (all published). In later portfolio. = These are all the plates of the Bryozoa (plates 1-10) and some Hydrozoa (plates 11-13) in Alcide d'Orbigny's magnum opus. A complete set of the scientific results of d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity, and even the individual parts are all very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years before completion. Many engravings are very detailed, and often highly enlarged. Most species are new and all are well-recognizable from these original illustrations. The "polypiers" include such genera as Thoa, Sertularia, Dynamena, Plumularia, and Tubularia. All plates were finely engraved by Delarue, after drawings by d'Orbigny himself. A very good, clean set of plates of this fabulous work. Nissen ZBI, 3021.

Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1839-1846. Folio (33.5 x 25.7 cm - text leaves slightly larger). Half-title to the Voyage; title page, half-title, 22 pp. [numbered (7)-28], 13 lithographed plates. Disbound. = The complete Bryozoa section of a very important, utterly rare, and extraordinary illustrated monograph on the natural history of South America, being the results of seven years of travels and collecting by one of the foremost French zoologists and palaeontologists, the French explorer, zoologist, botanist and palaeontologist Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857). A complete set of the scientific results of d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity, and even the individual parts, such as this one on bryozoids, are all very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years before completion. The fine plates are by the best French natural history artist of the period, in this case by Jean Delarue, after originals by d'Orbigny himself. The published results are entirely based on his own collections and researches. The half-title to the Voyage foxed; the plates much less affected, mostly in the margins only. Text leaves clean. Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1839. Folio (33.6 x 25.6 cm -text leaves slightly wider). Title page, half-title, 86 pp.; nine lithographed plates of which two partly hand-coloured. Disbound. = The complete Foraminifera section of a very important, utterly rare, and extraordinary illustrated monograph on the natural history of South America, being the results of seven years of travels and collecting by one of the foremost French zoologists and palaeontologists, the French explorer, zoologist, botanist and palaeontologist Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857). The fine plates are by d'Orbigny himself. Molluscs and foraminifers were his preferred objects of study, probably because they combined his zoological and palaeontological-geological interests. Mostly marginal, and usually weak foxing throughout. There is a fairly modern reprint, but with a reduced size it is no match. Nissen ZBI, 3021; Sabin, 57457.

Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1839-1846. Folio (34.4 x 25.2 cm). Title page, half-title, 22 pp. [numbered (7)-28], 13 lithographed plates. Contemporary boards with the printed wrappers mounted. = A very important monograph of South American bryozoids with the inclusion of many new species. This forms the whole Bryozoa section of one of the largest and rarest series on the natural history of South America, being the results of years of travels and collecting by one of the foremost French zoologists and palaeontologists. Slightly trimmed. Old private library stamp, of "Hartogh Heijs van de Lier Bibl. Entom. Delft" on the title page, and a Dutch entomologal society on a label mounted on the front board. Some spotting and water-staining to the first text pages, more obtrusive on the lower third of the titles, with remnants of mildew, the plates, however, generally very clean. Nissen ZBI, 3021.

Paris, Victor Masson, 1849-1852. Two volumes in three. 8vo (17.3 x 10.7 cm). 1,147 [299; 848] pp.; 793 [165; 628] woodcuts in the text; folded table. Uniform contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spines with five raised bands and two black morocco labels with gilt title and volume number. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges. = An important work by the father of French palaeontology: the explorer, malacologist, botanist, and geologist Alcide Charles Victor Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1855). DSB: 'With the publication of Prodome and of another basic work with similar aims, Cours élémentaire de paléontologie et de géologie stratigraphiques (1849-1852), d'Orbigny established the close and enduring connection between invertebrate palaeontology and stratigraphic geology that has proved so fruitful for both disciplines'. The text volumes are profusely illustrated. As often, the quarto tableaux are not included. The second volume has continuous pagination, thus the claim by a Spanish bookseller that there are 382 additional pages is incorrect. Old owner's name and acquisition note (in pencil) on the half-title of volume 1, scattered light, mostly marginal spotting, otherwise a very good, clean set. Rare. DSB vol. 10, p. 222; Ward and Carozzi, 1684.

Paris, privately published, 1840. Large 4to (34.5 x 27.4 cm). 98 pp., 18 lithographed plates. 19th-century blind half cloth over blue boards. Original printed front and rear wrappers mounted. = A rare and rather early work by the famous French zoologist, palaeontologist and explorer Alcide Charles Victor Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802-1857). The pages 97-98 are in an old hand, not printed, neither is there a title page. According to Nissen the work was finished in 1858, thus after the death of the author, when, indeed, the last two pages and the title page were issued. The manuscript text leaf, although in an old hand, was inserted after binding. Tiny round stamp underneath the first page, probably from a former gymnasium school. Text leaves a bit spotted, mainly in the margins; plates 16-17 rather spotted, the other plates much less so and usually clean, except a few with a small, semi-circular stain in the top margin. In all a good copy of this important work. Nissen ZBI, 3018.

Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1842. Folio (34.0 x 25.9 cm). Title page, half-title, 182 pp.; 22 finely lithographed plates. Spine with gilt lines and title. Later blind linen spine over contemporary boards. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges. = This is the complete palaeontology section, including all the plates, of Alcide d'Orbigny's magnum opus. A complete set of the scientific results of d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity. Even the individual parts are very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years to complete. Most plates show fossil molluscs. Many species are new and all are recognizable from these original illustrations. The first 13 plates are captioned "Géologie"; plates 14-15 are captioned "Paleontologie", and 16-22, correctly, "Paléontologie". Included: on the last blank, verso and recto is a written copy in an old hand, of the paper he published in the Journal de Conchyliologie of 1853 (pp. 206-208) in which he describes three new ammonites from South America, apparently in addition to this publication. Provenance: bookplate of the French-American geologist and palaeontologist Jules Marcou (1824-1898) mounted on the front pastedown. Decomission stamp of an American museum on the front free endpaper recto, and in the top margin of the title page a pencilled annotation by the Australian palaeontologist and malacologist Jeffrey Darl Stilwell. Rather spotted and toned, as usual. Binding of the plates weak; rear endpaper chipped at edges and detached. Nevertheless a good copy of this fabulous work. Cat. BM(NH) pp. 603, 1473; Nissen ZBI, 3021; Sabin, 57457. Not in Ward and Carozzi.

Paris, Victor Masson, 1850-1860. Two volumes in two. 8vo (22.2 x 14.1 cm [text]; 22.0 x 15.7 cm [atlas]). 623 pp.; 198 lithographed plates, numbered 235-431, 237bis. Contemporary uniform half morocco over marbled boards. Spines with four raised bands, gilt vignettes and title. Marbled endpapers. = The most important contribution to the knowledge of the Jurassic gastropods of western Europe, with the descriptions and illustrations of numerous new and poorly known species. Alcide d'Orbigny died in 1855 before the work was finished. A small part of the text was then edited by the French palaeontologist Gustave-Honoré Cotteau (1818-1894), who is better known for his work on fossil Echinodermata. (Note de l'editeur, Octobre 1859)". The plate volumes with engravings, mostly by Delarue and Levasseur, are among the finest lithographed molluscan figures produced. The plate numbering is consecutive to that of the earlier published Cephalopoda volume, but the page numbering starts anew. The series Paléontologie Française was started by D'Orbigny and continued until 1894, treating various groups of fossils, also from Tertiary and older strata, and by different authors. For instance, Cotteau treated the Jurassic echinoderms, between 1867 and 1874. Several sections remained unfinished. Provenance: on the front pastedowns a bookplate of the library of Harvard College, "bought with the gift of William Gray of Boston, Mass (Class of 1829)", and dated by hand "July 19, 1862"; stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the half-title top margin. A very good, complete set. Text with some spotting, as usual; the plates amazingly clean. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1474; Caprotti II, p. 207; Nissen ZBI, 4739.
