Compiled from original affidavits and other authentic documents. Musgrave, political writer and politician for whom the events of 1798 had a single cause: papist aggression against protestants. Not surprisingly the account of the rising is filled with frightening examples of Irish Catholic brutality and perfidy intended to illustrate their total unfitness for political liberty. For Musgrave the great lesson to be learned from 1798 was the impossibility of political compromise with Irish Catholics. See ODNB.
