Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Various (illustrator). First edition. The first edition collection of Lockhart's satirical letters written as Dr Peter Morris, in an attractive fine binding. Complete in Three Volumes. With portrait plates of eminent gentleman, including Sir Walter Scott. Includes a Postscript to the Third Edition to the rear of Volume III. Styled the Second Edition as part of the satire, but in fact the First Edition, as noted in the 'The Epistle Liminary to the Second Edition' and from COPAC. "In this work of epistolary fiction Dr Peter Morris, a Welshman, travels to Scotland and connects with the important personages of the age. Penetrating and lively character sketches are the highlights of his letters to friends and relatives in Wales. As one of the most important chronicles of early nineteenth-century life in Scotland Peter's Letters can be seen as the "biography of a culture" (Hart, 46)." (DNB) With Joseph Cook"s armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, with view of Newton Hall. Reverend Joseph Cook (1759-1844) was vicar of Chatton and Shilbottle, and was "sufficiently acquainted with the duke of Northumberland". (DNB) In half calf bindings, with marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. Externally, smart. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild rubbing, with the leather coming away from the spine of volume one. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light background foxing. Very Good. book.
