Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. `I long to study the purely national, natural character of an Irishwoman' When Horatio, the son of an English lord, is banished to his father's Irish estate as punishment for gambling debts and dissipated living, he adopts the persona of knight errant and goes off in search of adventure. On the wild west coast of Connaught he finds remnants of a romantic Gaelic past a dilapidated castle, a Catholic priest, a deposed king and the king's lovely and learned daughter, Glorvina. In this setting and among these characters Horatio learns the history, culture and language of a country he had once scorned, but he must do so in disguise for his own English ancestors are responsible for the ruin of the Gaelic family he comes to love. Written after the Act of Union, The Wild Irish Girl (1806) is a passionately nationalistic novel and a founding text in the discourse of Irish nationalism. The novel proved so controversial in Ireland that Sydney Owenson, later Lady Morgan, was put under surveillance by Dublin Castle. Lady Morgan's (née Sydney Owenson) (1781-1859) elaborate study of France under the Bourbon Restoration accompanied by four appendixes containing her husband's accounts of law, finance, medicine, and political opinion in the country, first published in 1817. The book was a great success, with four English editions, two French, and two American making a quick appearance. However upon publication it earned some detractors, notably Irish statesman and author John Wilson Croker (1780-1857), who venomously attacked the book in the Quarterly Review, accusing Morgan of Jacobinism, falsehood, licentiousness, and impiety in the process. The Irish historian William John Fitzpatrick (1830-1895) was much kinder, describing the work thus: "France, which may be regarded as the chef-d'oeuvre of Lady Morgan, is divided into eight books. The first treats of the peasantry; the second and third of society. The three next are devoted to an account of Paris. The seventh book is consecrated aux spectacles. The eighth and last, comprises sketches of the leading literary characters and eminent people of France, while the whole is richly spangled with a number of curious and out-of-the-way anecdotes".
