Zustand: Very Good. 2 vols: xi, 332 (text); xiii, 466 b/w photos (246 stereoscopic collotypes) , 9 maps, charts, 101 text figs. . HB. Vg copy. Light foxing to title page in vol. 2. Text French. Recueil de l'Institut Botanique Léo Errera T. Suppl. 7 bis. A phytogeographical study of Belgium. Jean Massart (1865-1925) was Professor at the University of Brussels. Today he is best known for this highly regarded work, which unusually included steroscopic photographs of plant habitats. In 1894/95 he collected botanical specimens in Java and Sumatra. From 1902 to 1906 he was curator of the Jardin botanique de l'État in Brussels. Maasart led an expedition to Brazil, 1922-23, with the aim of collecting specimens for the Brussels herbarium.
Gand, Annoot-Braeckman, Ad. Hoste, 1898. 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm). 140 pp., seven phototype plates. Original printed front wrapper. = Signed by the author, the Belgian biologist, conservationist and botanist Jean Massart (1865-1925), to Monsieur P. Groom, on the title. This must be the British botanist Percy Groom (1865-1931), writer of "Elementary botany" (1898), and "Trees and their Life Histories . Illustrated from photographs by Henry Irving" (1907), and whose collection is in Kew Gardens. Each plate contains two or three images, of "typical" Sahara landscapes. This is an offprint, with separate title page, and double page numbering, of the Bulletin de la Société Royale Botanique de Belgique. Uncut. Tiny decommission stamp in the top margin of the front wrapper. A good copy. Rare.
