Es soll ja Leute geben, die grundsatzlich keine Lyrik im Bucherregal dulden, nun denn; wer aber nur einen einzigen Lyrikband hat, dem ist zu wunschen, dass er diesen hat. Schluter hat 250 Gedichte vom 13. bis ins beginnende 20. Jahrhundert ubersetzt, fast alles Kleinodien der englischen Literatur (und wenn's keine waren, hat Schluter sie dazu gemacht). Wenig kanonisiertes Zeugs aus den akademischen Anthologien ist dabei; die Auswahl ist frisch, undogmatisch, beherzt. Frischer, undogmatischer, beherzter noch ist Schluters Ubersetzungsprinzip: er ubersetzt die Wirkungskraft der Gedichte, und zwar die auf den heutigen Leser; Gedichte, die den Briten heute befremdlich klingen, sollen's in der Ubersetzung auch den deutschen Lesern tun. Leicht gesagt, doch schwer verwirklicht - es sei denn, man geht mit Schluterscher Virtuositat und Prazision zu Werke. ' - schrieb Friedhelm Rathjen, als dieses Buch zum ersten Mal, und damals als exklusiver Privatdruck, erschienen war. Die Neuausgabe ist um nichts weniger fein und zudem erganzt um die englischen Originalgedichte und ein Nachwort.
