Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: mit Schutzumschlag. 235x160 mm., 88 p., Hardcover with DJ, Sprache: Englisch, Very good general condition. Dust jacket with little signs of storage. Hand written, personal dedication of the author on title page [see uploaded image]. USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. This Volume, including portraits, is the only book about Henrietta Johnston who, through her art, left a heritage of fresh and delicate faces from colonial days. The plates from Henrietta Johnston's portraits, including a copy by Copley, including photographs taken when the original drawings had deteriorated greatly, are brought, together for the first time. These will enable the critic to evaluate the artist's work, and may also encourage dealers and art historians toward further endeavor in a search for other pastels attributed to the artist. From Mrs. Middleton's account of the artist's struggles in the New World, the reader will gain new insight into social conditions in early South Carolina. That was no soft day of silks and dancing. Instead it was a day of struggle for settlement and survival, and the lives of many were shortened under the strain. Curiously, the subjects, as portrayed by the artist, show none of the tribulations of their daily living. "Henrietta Johnston: America's First Pastellist" is told chiefly through her paintings and as the wife of an early Commissary with The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, the Reverend Gideon Johnston. The Johnstons departed from England March 2. 1708, arriving some time later. Henrietta Johnston became a local artist in Charles Town, South Carolina, painting likenesses of the town's first fami-lies, and those elsewhere. Frontispiece in color, also shown on the dust jacket, is of Frances Lambert Moore (1715-1805). The subject was about ten years old at the time of the painting. The portrait was in the Bayard family for many years and is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Schwartz of New Jersey. 34 plates of portraits by, or attributed to Henrietta Johnston, one in color; other il-lustrations of Charles Town.
