Most boo…ks on acoustics are in the main scientific and must make assump-tions that are not based on what the musical reader already knows. In this book the approach is quite different. Here we start from the musical ear. The musical scale is explained as it was developed by com-posers. Those acoustical facts which make keyboard instruments possible, with their twelve notes to the octave, are dealt with as the need to under-stand them becomes evident. Graphs are freely used. By such pictorial methods the author shows how sounding bodies vibrate. To ex-plain why sounding bodies vibrate is the mathematician's job. In this study the appendices provide the essentials of his explanations. No reader need be repelled by the logarithms used in some calculations. It will not be found necessary to under-stand them if the results are accepted, for these results are finally expressed in musica.
