Edinburgh, W. H. Lizars, 1833. 8vo-size (16.5 x 10.5 cm). Engraved by Lizars. Disbound. = This engraving, made for William Jardine's 'Naturalist's Library', shows Linnaeus when he was 25 years old, dressed in his Lapland costume. Beneath the portrait is a facsimile of Linnaeus's autograph. The artist was Jardine's brother-in-law, the Scottish engraver and publisher William Home Lizars (1788-1859). It was published as frontispiece to ornithology volume VI of the Naturalist's Library series, being the first volume on hummingbirds, but including a memoir of Linnaeus. Some very light spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Soulsby, 3186.

London, Dr. Thornton, 1812. Single leaf (38.0 x 30.5 cm). Mezzotint. Printed surface 36 x 24 cm. = A fine print, drawn by Russel and Opie, and engraved by Maddocks. First published in 1799 as frontispiece to Thornton's Botanical extracts, or Philosophy of Botany, Volume III (Soulsby, 3153). It was reprinted for Thornton's New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Linnaeus, published in 1806 (Soulsby, 3154), however, as Easculapius, Flora, Ceres, and Cupid Honouring the Bust of Linnaeus (reversing the names, but not the image), but this 1812 edition is not listed by Soulsby. It differs from the earlier version in listing a new engraver - the first two were by Ridley. Rather toned, especially in the outer margins. Edges a bit frayed, with small tears and chips, otherwise very good. Rare. Soulsby, 3153.

[Halmstad], Svenska Familj-Journalens Förlag, [1897]. Oblong sheet (33.6 x 40.6 cm) with full colour mezzotint plate (27.0 x 35.5 cm), and printed caption. = This coloured mezzotint is a copy of an oil painting by the Swedish painter Gustaf Henrik Brusewitz (1812-1899). Brusewitz painted this allegorical piece in 1866. It shows Linnaeus in a Swedish summer landscape, surrounded by his students, with Linnaeus holding a flowering plant in his left hand. The number of disciples - twelve - does not seem to be coincidental. A printed caption state that it was published by the Swenska [SIC: Svenska] Familj-Journalens Förlag. It is not dated but probably it was published in 1897. This print also exists in an uncoloured version, known to be published in that year. Closed tear in the upper margin, with some additional blank stickers on the plate verso. Otherwise very good. Not in Soulsby (Soulsby, 3219 has an identical description, but, being dated 1863, cannot be the same).

Hasselquist, Fredrik (1722-52); Carl Linnaeus (1707-78). Voyages and travels in the Levant; in the years 1749, 50, 51, 52. Containing observations in natural history, physick, agriculture and commerce . . . [8], viii, 456pp. Engraved frontispiece map. London: L. Davis & C. Reymers, 1766. 202 x 120 mm. Gilt-ruled calf ca. 1766, rebacked preserving original spine, light edgewear. Minor foxing and toning but very good. Occasional pencil notes in a later hand. First Edition in English. Hasselquist was one of the so-called "Apostles of Linnaeus"â "students who traveled throughout the world on scientific expeditions devised or sanctioned by Carl Linnaeus. "Linnaeus in his lectures had often mentioned the Levant, and Palestine in particular, as fruitful, unexplored country for the naturalist, and he fired Hasselquist with the desire to go there. In vain the Master tried to dissuade him: the boy hadn't the money, he hadn't the stamina (he showed signs of consumption). But Hasselquist would not listen to reason. The moneyâ "just, but only just, enoughâ "was raised by Linnaeus, and a free passage to Izmir (Smyrna) found in one of the ships of the Levant Company" (Blunt, The Compleat Naturalist: A Life of Linnaeus, pp. 184-185). From 1749 to 1752 Hasselquist traveled throughout the Middle East and some of the Aegean islands, amassing a rich collection of zoological, botanical and geological specimens; unfortunately, his health failed and he died before he could return to Sweden. When Linnaeus read Hasselquist's travel journals, he was extremely impressed: "I swear I have never yet read anything so full of fresh, genuine and precise observations as these; they penetrate me as God's word penetrates a deacon . . . So admirable a travel journal has never appeared" (quoted in Blunt, p. 185). In 1757 he published Hasselquist's journal under the title Iter Palaestinium; this was followed by translations into English, German, French and Dutch. "Fundamenta botanica is a reprint of the second edition (1740); the Sponsalia plantarum of the 1746 edition. The Systema naturae is a reprint with slight alterations of the fourth editon, Paris 1744" (cfr. Stafleu). Qualche lieve ed uniforme brunitura è dovuta alla qualità della carta, ma lo stato di conservazione è eccellente. Ampli i margini. Pubblicazione davvero rara. Holmiae, Laurentius Salvius, 1758-59 + 1768. 8vo. Beautifully bound in two recent full mottled calf bindings, in pastiche, with five raised bands, and gilt title-labels to spine. Gilt borders to boards and blindstamped ornamental borders to inside of boards. Title-page of volume 1 with two neatly repaired tears, no loss. Very discreet stamp in blind to title-page (Boston Society Natural History). A few leaves lightly brownspotted, otherwise exceptionally clean (vol. 1 presumably cleaned). All in all a lovely copy. (4), 823, (1, -errata, being p. (824))" (4) pp, pp. 825-1384 + 236, (20, -Index) pp. + 3 folded, engraved plates. The rare seminal tenth edition of Linnaeus' main work (here bound together with the 3rd part, published 10 years later), being the most important edition of this foundational work, as "[i]t is in this edition that Linnaeus carried out the definitive plan of binominal nomenclature, with diagnosis and synonyms, for the fist time, including the generic and the trivial names, which together form the specific name of each animal. This edition has therefore been accepted as "the basis of zoological nomenclature". (Sandberg no. 12). "Systema Natura" is considered the bible of natural history, and with the definitive tenth edition of it, it founded modern zooloical nomenclature and changed the science more profoundly than any other work before or after. "During his lifetime, Linnaeus exerted an influence in his field - botany and natural history - that had had few parallels in the history of science. Driven by indomitable ambition and aided by an incredible capacity for work, he accomplished the tremendous task that he had set for himself in his youth: the establishment of new systems for the three kingdoms of nature to facilitate the description of all known animals, plants, and minerals." (D.S.B. VIII:374)."He compiled this work, consisting only of seven folio leaves, as a first outline of what in its further development became the foundation of botanical and zoological classification systems. Linné was first and foemost a systematist, subordinating all botanical problems to that of classification. He established the principles of class, order, genus and species for all plants and animals. The tenth edition of the Systema Naturae, 1758, is his final version of the system by which many plants and animals are still named to this day with references "Linnaeus", "Linn." or "L." attached." (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 114)."In this edition, the binomial system previously emplyed by Linnaeus in the work entitled "Museum Tessinianum" (1753) was extended in its application to all the kingdoms of nature" the Artedian classification of fishes, adopted in the earlier editions, was superseded by the familiar Linnaean system, and the cetaceans were for the first time eliminated from the class of fishes and grouped with the viviparous quadrupeds under the new class name Mammalia." (Soulsby)."TENTH, AND DEFINITIVE, EDITION" a scarce and highly important printing, which standardized zoological taxonomy and nomenclature and utilized binomial nomenclature (generic coupled with a specific epithet) throughout. In this edition, Linnaeus became the first naturalist to recognize whales as mammals." (Freilich-sale, no. 358).Sandberg 12" Norman 1:1359 Soulsby 58 Stafleu & Cowan TL2 4794 Hulth p.6.

2 in 1 Bd. 6 Bll., 560 S., 1 Bl., S. 561 - 1200, 16 Bll. - Soulsby 480a. Hulth 89. Heimann 107. Pritzel 5427. Stafleu-C. 4769. Sparrow 136. Hunt 548: "the most important single work in the world"s botanical literature". "In den Species Plantarum von 1753 werden siebentausenddreihundert Arten beschrieben, alle nach dem Sexualsystem geordnet und fast alle von Linné selbst untersucht" (Carter/M. 192). - "Species plantarum was the first work to account for all the kinds of plants then known for the world, to classify them according to a simple system by which anyone can determine their identity, and to provide for each kind a name of two words. This addition of a binominal system of nomenclature to the polynomial system has caused this work to be designated as the starting point for the modern nomenclature of ferns and flowering plants" (Introduction by W. T. Stearn. In: Carl Linnaeus Species plantarum. A facsimile of the first edition 1753). - "The publication of Linnaeus`s Species Plantarum in 1753 is regarded as the starting point for the Latin binomial, or two-word, names of plants. Before his taxonomic system was adopted, there was confusion. For example, the Wild Briar Rose was identified by botanists as Rosa sylvestris alba cum rubore, folio glabro (roughly meaning pinkish white woodland rose with hairless leaves), and Rosa sylvestris inodora seu canina (odorless woodland dog rose). The Linnaean system reduced the confusion by tagging it simply - Rosa canina. Some 5,900 different plant species were labeled in Linnaeus`s Species Plantarum, a work which he himself called `the greatest in botany.` One of note was Linnaea borealis, the hardy twinflower which became a floral talisman for Linnaeus" (www.library.otago.ac.nz). - Durchgehend wasserrandig.
