Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - I. In some periods of the past Netherlands medicine has played a major role in the evolution of European medicine; today its history still enjoys much in terest even at the other side of the Ocean. In this bibliography it has been my endeavour to compile references for all that has been written on the history of Dutch medicine in our country and elsewhere in our age. The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end ofthe sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. Therefore many entries have been included which bear on early (and sometimes later) Flemish medicine, but it has not been the inten tion to strive for completeness in this respect.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Two volumes only. 1962 and 1964. Analecta Boerhaaviana III & V. 8vo. pp. x, 241; [viii], 417. Four full-page plates. Facsimiles in the text. Original publisher's dark orange cloth lettered gilt on spines and upper covers. Two typed letters signed by G. A. Lindeboom and addressed to W. L. Tjaden, a horticultural author, tipped-in. The first on headed notepaper addressed to Mr W. L. Tjaden, 85 Welling Way, Welling, Kent DA 16 2RW dated 27 December 1973 consisting of nearly 250 words in which Lindeboom thanks Tjaden for all the corrections saying 'I feel awfully ashamed that you found out so many errors in my work,' he continues by explaining all the difficulties he has had to contend with in the translating and deciphering of the letters. The second on headed notepaper written to the same address and recipient dated 6 April 1977 consisting of over 80 words in which Lindeboom thanks Tjaden for his reprint of 'Botanicon' and his letter. He continues by saying 'I do not think that I am in error everytime you say so. However, I would gladly admit any errors of mine rather than to believe that Boerhaave has been telling deliberate lies!' Tjaden has written a note on the front pastedown endpaper of volume one saying that the corrections sent to Lindeboom on 22 Nov '73 have been entered in this copy in ink. He has also tentatively inserted a part letter of Boerhaave's which has not been sent to Lindeboom on page 72. There are also two further tipped-in letters. Boerhaave (1668 Ð 1738) was a Dutch botanist, humanist and physician who was famous throughout Europe. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital. His main achievement was to demonstrate the relation of symptoms to lesions. In addition, he was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. The first volume includes letters addressed to Cox Marco and William Sherard and correspondence with Hans Sloane, Richard Mead and Cromwell Mortimer. The second volume includes correspondence with persons in various European countries and letters to Joannes Baptista Bassand and one letter to Pius Garelli. Some of the letters are in Latin with English translations and others are in French. Volume one includes Tjaden's ink corrections and pencil annotations in the text. VG+. Very good indeed.
