Couverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. Reliure modeste.

Second edition (first 1791) of Lavoisier's most important contribution as an economist, "a milestone in the history of economic science and national statistics and accounting" (Poirier, p. 266). The work was reprinted after the Terror, to which Lavoisier famously fell victim, in Collection de divers ouvrages d'Arithmétique politique (1797). "De la richesse territoriale. de France, which was printed in 1791 by order of the National Assembly, constitutes an extract from a larger work on which Lavoisier had been engaged since 1784 in an effort to complete and verify an analysis of national income undertaken by Dupont de Nemours. Lavoisier's main argument is that the monetary valuation of national income from different sources leads to double counting; that the only method exempt from such difficulties is that based on an estimate of annual consumption, since exports and imports in France balance one another; and that in estimating consumption allowance must be made for the variation in the budgets of different social classes. Thus he estimated that the annual per capita income of the poorest families is from 60 livres to 70 livres, but he set the value of average per capita income at 110 livres, a figure admittedly similar to that of Quesnay in his Philosophie rurale (1763). The net national income, computed by estimating the net revenue in the various branches of agriculture, he put at only 1,200,000,000, of which half goes to the treasury in the form of taxes and the rest constitutes the landowners' rent" (ESS, p. 200). The three works bound in after De la richesse territoriale are: a) CHÂTEAUVIEUX, Frédéric Lullin de. Lettres de Saint-James. Geneva: J. J. Paschoud, 1820. Pp. 103, [1]. 1 folding plate. First edition of the first of five "Letters" by the influential Swiss agronomist; the remaining four were published between 1821-26. b) FAURE, Louis-Etienne-Baptiste. Mémoire sur les prairies artificielles. Paris: Fantin & Madame Huzard, 1814. Pp. 30. First edition. Faure was the administrator of Hautes-Alpes at the time of the Revolution; in later life he devoted his time to agricultural improvements in Briançonnais. Paris: Didot, 1819. Pp. 46. A few small ink annotations to the text. First edition; WorldCat and Library Hub locate copies at two institutions, the BnF and the University of Michigan. Martin & Walter 19846; Perrot, Histoire intellectuelle de l'Économie politique, p. 435; Quérard IV, p. 642; cf. INED 2690-1; not in Goldsmiths' or Kress. Jean-Pierre Poirier, Lavoisier: Chemist, Biologist, Economist, 1996. Bound first in a volume of four related works, octavo (201 x 125 mm), pp. 66. Contemporary tree calf, red morocco spine label, spine elaborately tooled in gilt with hand written paper label ("Lavoisier Richesse territoriale") to third compartment, marbled endpapers and edges, red bookmarker. Spine ends and corners worn, corners bumped, head and foot of front joint starting, inner hinges cracked but firm, contents lightly tanned with occasional spotting and a few leaves thinned, overall a very good copy.

His book has never been completed. The importance and originality of this economic study are recognized today, Lavoisier appears as a rigorous practitioner of political arithmetic, and the forerunner of national statistics. "For a population of 25,000,000 he deduced a total consumption income of 2,750,000,000 livres. The net national income, computed by estimating the net revenue in the various branches of agriculture, he put at only 1,200,000,000, of which half goes to the treasury in the form of taxes and the rest constitutes the landowners' rent". XVI, 351 pages. Illustrated softcover binding.23x15 cm * Cambridge Science Biographies Series. This biography represents a comprehensive, accessible account of the great eighteenth-century French chemist and administrator, Antoine Lavoisier. Historians of science know Lavoisier as a founder of modern chemistry. Students of the French Revolution know him as an important financier and administrator in the final decades of the old regime and as the most famous scientist to be guillotined during the Terror. This volume devotes equal attention to the creation of his oxygen theory of combustion and to his efforts as a public administrator before and during the Revolution. Lavoisier was an historical figure of extraordinary importance. His biography illuminates the rise of modern science and the history of the French Revolution. Antoine Lavoisier provides its reader with a vivid, informed image of the man, his achievement, and the tumultuous age in which he lived. --- Antoine Laurent de Lavoisier (* 26. XIX, (3) 240 pages. Blue original cloth binding. (No dustjacket). 22x14 cm * Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (also Antoine Lavoisier after the French Revolution; French: 26 August 1743 8 May 1794) was a French nobleman and chemist who was central to the 18th-century chemical revolution and who had a large influence on both the history of chemistry and the history of biology. He is widely considered in popular literature as the "father of modern chemistry". It is generally accepted that Lavoisier's great accomplishments in chemistry largely stem from his changing the science from a qualitative to a quantitative one. Lavoisier is most noted for his discovery of the role oxygen plays in combustion. He recognized and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783) and opposed the phlogiston theory. Lavoisier helped construct the metric system, wrote the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He predicted the existence of silicon (1787)[5] and was also the first to establish that sulfur was an element (1777) rather than a compound. He discovered that, although matter may change its form or shape, its mass always remains the same.Lavoisier was a powerful member of a number of aristocratic councils, and an administrator of the Ferme générale. The Ferme générale was one of the most hated components of the Ancien Régime because of the profits it took at the expense of the state, the secrecy of the terms of its contracts, and the violence of its armed agents. All of these political and economic activities enabled him to fund his scientific research. At the height of the French Revolution, he was charged with tax fraud and selling adulterated tobacco, and was guillotined. (Quelle Wikipedia) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 800.

This most important memoir by Lavoisier and Laplace was based on work done in the winter of 1782-83. The paper was read before the Académie on June 18, 1783. An ice calorimeter of their own invention was employed to measure specific heats and the heat evolved in combustion and respiration. In their experiements with guinea pigs, Lavoisier and Laplace demonstrated that respiration is in every way a very slow combustion process, and that chaleur animale is constantly beeing maintained by means of 'matière du feu' which is produced during respiration. Duveen & Klickstein I, p.54f. and: Lavoisier zwote Abhandlung über verschiedene Verbindungen der Phosphorsäure (S.254-258). "This memoir was read on November 18, 1780. It is concerned with the compounds of phosphoric acid. Lavoisier refers to oxygen in this publication as air vital. Lavosier points out in this paper that, if it was correct that phosphorus on burning yieled its acid through combinantion with atmospheric oxygen was induced to react with it. He state that, theorectically, nitric acid should be adequate for this purpose and describes the solution of phosphorus in hot nitric acid to give phosphoric acid. Lavoisier follows up his account with another attack on the phlogistan theory." Duveen & Klickstein I, p.54 Duveen 55 (externsice abstract), 54 (abstract), 55 (abstract).
